I was wondering what people were thinking about the gso 8 blade height and width
For a chopper I was wondering if a 0.25 and a 2 inch blade would make it a more poweful chopper while maintaining a compact OAL
Since it's still far from being build maybe the specs can be altered
:D

All opionions welcome

I like the idea of a taller blade, so I support the two inch idea. Originally I thought there would be something augmented with this model to give it a closer amount of chopping heft like the 10 but in a shorter package. But............ I don't know the first thing about knife design, so I defer to Guy's infinite wisdom :D

I doubt it'll change the knife's splitting capabilities by being 3/16. The extra weight and cost of 1/4 steel doesn't seem like it would be worth it in the end.

First post here[emoji4] IMO the added weight from increasing thickness and height would go against the design philosophy of being a more portable light chopper. For me the GSO8 design is a more refined and sexier version of Becker7 with similar dimensions, and the BK7 is certainly a proven design as a light chopper/utility camp knife IMO.

Nice first post and nice comparison

These are excellent points.
I feel that the 7/7 is already a multi purpose knife. The 8 would be a stronger chopper with the blade width of the 10 in a shorter package
But then again I like chopping things !

I thought they had the same width. Crap I'll have to go look at their specs!

Nope, the 8 is scheduled for 1.75" blade height and .190" thick. The 10 is calling for 2" height and .200" thick.

I actually had it in my head that the 10 was scheduled for thicker stock.

Haha I was scratching my head for a moment there! Now the 8 is even more appealing to me as a slightly smaller beast.

Yo uare probably right that 0.19 would be the ideal width. I still think that 2 inch would be the ideal height... Not a huge difference but it would make it an even better kitchen knife :D

I never thought of using it as a kitchen knife! Tomatoes wouldn't stand a chance!

OMG......a GSO Cleaver....what an amazing idea! The Kitchen Survival Series!!! I'll take a KSS 9.1 Please!

What if the thickness at the heel remained 1.75" then increased to between 2" - 2.25" at the start of the belly? Would make a fine chopper since more of the weight is towards the tip of the blade!
The balance of the knife would be a bit awkward when doing smaller tasks though. Maybe this would be better suited to the GSO 10?

Not a bad idea, but remember the 10 is supposed to be somewhat balanced to be a large one knife option. You might be on to something entirely new!

Regardless I want to try the gso 8
Hopefully this summer !

Good points! I guess that Mr. Seirferd's first priority these days is getting the existing models built and shipped, and maybe only after that would he look into new models.
Would be nice to see something like this in the future though...... could be a different version of the 8, or an enirely new 9?!

Guy is an uncanny creature. Just when you think he'd be content with great designs that are flying off the shelf he redesigns them all. Then he adds the 12 and 2.7. Then when you think you're safe he releases the 8........ and then the 4.5! All the while working behind the scenes on new finish and heat treat and adding new patches and shirts and Rite in the Rain products. It's like he just can't help himself :D

That's why we always come back for more :D

Then, he adds a folder. And then, a GSO 20
