Sal,
I'm sure this won't change your production line/design at all, but I just wanted to give you my $0.02.
Caveat: I LOVE my Gunting so far. It's a totally sweet knife. This is just a gripe that I'd change if it were my design. (No offense, Bram.
)
I've been playing with my Gunting for a while now, and I finally remembered why I like my Emersons and the BM 806D2.
The front guard is deep, wide, and very functional.
I can dangle the knife, butt-down, blade-up, off my index finger on the classic Emerson front guard (and thumb on the ramp) without any slippage -- to me, a good test of how much my finger will slip forward if I'm just cutting something with a forward stroke, much less strong thrusting.
I'd rather not rely on my grip strength and a high coefficient of friction to keep my hand on the handle (wonderful handle, though!) if the SHTF.
I refuse to carry ANY knife that doesn't have at least some forward guard -- there's too much risk of a moment of inattention leading to great pain and possible permanent incapacitation.
The front guard on the Gunting is, like the Military, L'il Temperance, or the AMK S2k, only a little better than a speed bump. Slows your hand down a little on the way to getting unhappy.
The full-size FB Temperance has a better guard that's more like it.
In rapid use, my fingers seem to have a tendency to slide forward onto the Gunting's blade. Not a good thing. This is how I managed to slice up my finger...
Just something to think about for the future... I'd love to see a Gunting with a slightly extended guard -- maybe just even 5mm/0.25" further down, leaving everything else the same. I checked, and there's still sufficient clearance for the finger in the Spydiehole.
The Yojimbo looks like it has a somewhat deeper guard, which is very much welcomed. If it were even deeper (i.e. the front portion extended downward) just a hair more, it would be even better.
Again, just my $0.02.
