Sal,

I'm sure this won't change your production line/design at all, but I just wanted to give you my $0.02.

Caveat: I LOVE my Gunting so far. It's a totally sweet knife. This is just a gripe that I'd change if it were my design. (No offense, Bram. :) )

I've been playing with my Gunting for a while now, and I finally remembered why I like my Emersons and the BM 806D2.

The front guard is deep, wide, and very functional.

I can dangle the knife, butt-down, blade-up, off my index finger on the classic Emerson front guard (and thumb on the ramp) without any slippage -- to me, a good test of how much my finger will slip forward if I'm just cutting something with a forward stroke, much less strong thrusting.

I'd rather not rely on my grip strength and a high coefficient of friction to keep my hand on the handle (wonderful handle, though!) if the SHTF.

I refuse to carry ANY knife that doesn't have at least some forward guard -- there's too much risk of a moment of inattention leading to great pain and possible permanent incapacitation.

The front guard on the Gunting is, like the Military, L'il Temperance, or the AMK S2k, only a little better than a speed bump. Slows your hand down a little on the way to getting unhappy.

The full-size FB Temperance has a better guard that's more like it.

In rapid use, my fingers seem to have a tendency to slide forward onto the Gunting's blade. Not a good thing. This is how I managed to slice up my finger...

Just something to think about for the future... I'd love to see a Gunting with a slightly extended guard -- maybe just even 5mm/0.25" further down, leaving everything else the same. I checked, and there's still sufficient clearance for the finger in the Spydiehole.

The Yojimbo looks like it has a somewhat deeper guard, which is very much welcomed. If it were even deeper (i.e. the front portion extended downward) just a hair more, it would be even better.

Again, just my $0.02.

Glad you like the tool..

I'm pretty far back on the handle when I use it..personally I've never slipped forward..
(there's no way over the ramp..and I seem to lock up in the finger groove up front by the lower guard...
one's thumb barely clears the lower guard upon opening the knife the Spyderco way,,,by the hole that is...ROFL)
and I stab it through body armor as demos...of it's punching power and that one doesn't slip up onto the blade...
I do this for Police and Military..just did it @ S2 Agency
and for CENTCOM.
I stab it through aircraft skin aluminum wrapped around heavy bags...
I drive the Drone through 1/2" plywood..
well you get the idea...

But I guess there's room for improvement every where..
thanks for the suggestion..

I don´t know if this also happens to anybody: on the Commander when using my thumb to open the knife I sometimes get stuck against the deep guard if I don´t make a wide enough arching swipe with my thumb.

biogon,

You should be easily able to get your Gunting customized slightly with a deeper guard. Someone like SC_Rebel could do it for a small fee if you aren't keen on trying yourself with a dremel: http://www.geocities.com/joyce43_c/RONSKNIFESHOP.html

Not saying that your opinion shouldn't matter to Spyderco, quite the opposite. But no matter the turnaround time, someone like SC_Rebel will get your knife back to you in far less time than it will take for a company to redesign a knife and re-release it :D

Ok OK..hold on..see I wassn't thinking out of box..
Look..
it costs a fortune to redo engiuneering..its not just a do this..
SPYDERCO is not changing what it makes ..it can't..not cost effective,
BUT...
I take all your comments really seriously and I do have custom Guntings made to fit some of these suggestions over tme that all of you have made....
really..

I sugest that if you want to get a one of a kind or a small custom run done..talk to me..
Otherwise..
Do as other have done..whether or not I agree, seem to object or whatever..
modify your Gunting..
Modify is the word..I use it like to customize..to make personal..not to alter..
yeah.. I know that sounds like splitting hairs.but I got that from DRag Racing in the old days..
modifieds, altereds..mod-alters....

thanks for playing with the gunting all of you and offereing suggestions!

Ack!

I didn't mean that they should change things!

I'm just rambling as usual... not intending to be so arrogant... it's just that I noticed that a LOT of Spyderco knives in general have little, if not no, forward guard, and that scares me. It's just one of my pet peeves.

That's all...that's all.

Bram,

Yep, I'm looking into a few ways to modify up mine. :)
