Guard needs buffing

I just finished another of my hunters. I have the blade just like I want it, nice 800 frit hand finish, logo etch came out nice, mesquite handle looks like I want it to look like. However, the guard has tiny swirles in it, and needs more buffing. How do you guys handle this? Simple as masking tape on the blade and handle? I get really nervous at this stage of the game when the knife is ready to be FedEx'ed, and I have something like this show up.

Robert, I know what you mean. Once ive got my guards attatched to the blade and I find I need some touching up all I do is take one of my sanding sticks, wrapped with the appropriate grit and start with full strokes of the guard and repeating with lighter grits. I hate going to the buffer as you mention at this point. Looking forward to seeing this one.

Robert, the masking tape works great for me for doing work after the blade is polished. It will also protect you from the blade. I run a couple of thickness strips lengthwise on the cuttind edge of the blade and then lap over the point, then tape up the whole blade. It saves me from scratching with those added nuisance scratches after the blade is finished, too. Y'all ever get a knife finished and ready to ship, and then notice a fresh scratch? My masking tape usually stays on until the thing is ready to box up.

One thing I have done is use a small felt wheel 1" dia on a fordom using the compond of choise. Gib

That's a good idea Gib. I'll try that first, along with John's idea to use the tape to protect me and the blade. I was not wanting to sit down in front of my huge 5 HP 3,600 RPM buffer, with 10" x 2" wheels. That thing has been wanting to eat me and my work for ages now. Thanks also Shane!
