Guard on Bowie

Before I start my grinding frenzy, I have a few in progress to point in the direction of completion. One is a bowie. I have the guard slotted and it fits up pretty tight. It takes a couple whacks with a piece of soft wood to seat it. The blade is nearly ready for heat treat so I have to decide between pins, solder or both. Any Suggestions? What is considered 'proper form'?

I guess I should have been more specific. It is a full tang design. By open slotted, I presume you mean the guard slides over the blade and is open where it meets the spine as is common with hunting knives. This guard goes above and below the handle so the slot is not open at either end. The maximum depth of the handle is about .020 less than the shoulder filed down to accept the guard. Umm... what else? The blade is ATS34, the guard is cutlers brass, thick enough for 1/8 inch pins. The handle will be stabilized, pinned and epoxyed so sealing is not a problem. My thoughts were to pin the guard and to save soldering in reserve in case I have to remake the guard after it has been heat treated. Make sense?

Rob, I said that wrong anyway. Even if the guard isn't open slotted, on a full tang knife you don't have the handle pressing the guard onto the hilt of the blade, so it needs pinning as well as soldering. Sorry for the error!

Ps. I just noticed something. I made my 1000th post on my 42nd birthday.

No, I wanted to fit the guard before heat treat so I could drill the pin holes. I just had to decide pins or no pins before heat treat. I'll do the actual pinning and soldering (and final shaping of the guard) after I get the blade back.
