Guard pinning

Hi folks,

Well, I've taken my second baby step and ordered another knife kit. This one will have a guard. I've ordered the peices and am now trying to figure out one tiny step.

The blade is pre-drilled for pinning the guard. The guard is of the pre-slotted, 3 sided variety, but has not been drilled.

Ummm...how do I drill the guard to match the holes in the blade? Or do I just skip it and drill my own thru the whole thing , clamped into place.

Seemed straight forward at the time....

thanks for your time.

First we need to know if the blade has been hardned? If not then you can drill through both pieces at the same time. If the blade is already hardned this makes things a little more difficult. You can start by cutting off most of the top of the guard so when placed on the knife it is almost level with the top of the blade, leave a little for finishing. Then on the outside of the guard , with the knife in place, scribe a line that follows the top of the blade. as if you were tracing the knif eso you kniw how deep the blade sits in the guard. Then take the knife out and place it on top of the guard, lining up the top of the blade and the line you scribed and mark the location of the hole through the blade with a pencil. This should give you a rough idea of where the hole should be. you cna go back and fourth and re-check a couple of times to make sure- "think twice, Cut once". If you make the hole too low you can always file away some material from the bottom of th eslot. Make it too high and you have wobble. Hope this helps.

thanks! That is pretty helpful. the blade is hardened, but that's good, as that is step I'm not quite ready to make myself.

Thanks again!
