Just curious how they solder on the guards and not disturb the heat treatment of the blade?
Thanks,
Ed

When we solder the hilts, or guards, we use an oxy-cetylene torch with a high heat but a fine pencil point flame. The heat is applied directly to the hilt and choil area and we melt the lead as quickly as possible. Jeff McCartney, who does most of the soldering in the shop can probably solder a hilt in 30 seconds or less. The blade never has time to get to a critical temperature. Even if it did get a little too hot the heat would be confined to the choil/Ricasso area and would not hurt the temper of the edge.
