Remember my silly quest for a metal hat I could cook in? Not only did I find one for the cost of a Mora, it arrived today! :D Yes I'll look like a fool, but at least I'll be a versatile fool! I'll try to cook in it on Saturday. ;)

Click.

I plan on making a new liner for it with some steel tabs and paracord. :)

And you can sing when you do it.:D

As long as you realize that I will be laughing at you, not with you.

j/k. I'm interested in seeing a review on this thing.

"I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to pick wildflowers..." :p

That skit always makes me laugh! :D

I was able to get an old model that was much lighter than anything made today. When safety standards rose nearly everyone stopped making aluminum hardhats, and the only ones around now (by Skull Bucket) are, like, $60 which was a lot more than I was willing to spend on something so...experimental. ;) I'll see if I can get some in-use pics up soon. :)

and there goes all that credibility you had!

Interesting...just tell everybody it's a vintage rock climbing head cover:D I remember taking a spit bath in the old metal GI helmet...make sure you have a good wool liner during the winter, I'd hate to post a horror story where your ears stuck to the inside of the helmet:eek: :D

What? I had credibility? No one ever told me! :D

In all honesty I know this will work, especially with some minor modifications. I know it's unconventional, and knew ahead of time I'd take flak for it...but you know what? So much of the outdoor community revolves around multipurpose items. This one will keep my noggin safe, keep the sun out of my eyes and off my neck, hold water for washing, boiling, or cooking, and won't take up space on/in my pack. I may be a goof but at least I'm creative! :)

Might be a bummer on a hot, sunny day. Otherwise, I like the idea alot...unless it was really, really cold. Keeps the alien's from scrambling your body's hard drive too.

With how reflective it is, I'm not sure if it'll actually get too bad. They used to be very popular, so I have to imagine there's a reason why. I can always stitch a removable white cloth cover for it, too. Either way I'll find out soon and you can expect to hear about it.

If it's cold out I'll just get a hood liner to wear under it. Bailey's carries them. :)

Yeah, yeah, aluminum hat... If there are aliens out there the surest sign that they're intelligent is that they aren't bothering to read my mind. ;)

I, personally, am rather excited to see how it performs for its repurposed tasks, even if met with little but mockery. No one has been able to tell me so far why it wouldn't work, other than potential heat issues that may or may not be a concern.

I don't know. I guess you could use it for when you are picking berries, for bringing extra water back to camp, etc. Give it a shot. If it works, A+ for thinking outside the box. If it don't, well, make up stories about the old lumberjacks hardhat you got.

:DMight as well get some brasso too so you can polish up the brim as a signal mirror...Just don't pack up and hike out to quickly after cooking dinner.:D

I don't know, the aluminum tool box on my truck gets REALLY hot and its pretty darn reflective too. Good luck.

It's actually startlingly bright as-is minus a few scuffs and one minor dent. I intend on giving it the mirror treatment, but mostly so it'll be easy to clean the soot off of when I'm done cooking in it. I tried filling it with water from the tap last night and good lord can it hold a lot! I could easily make a soup for three people in this thing. I've got a few good ideas for mods right now, but I'll post them when I'm done. :)

With regards to the heat, once again, the aluminum hardhats used to be quite popular, so there must have been some way around it! :)

Yes, they were replaced with fiberglass and/or plastic :D Seriously though, I think its a good idea! Way to use your now overly protected noggin!
