Hi guys,
Here is a fun challenge.
This is currently the core set of my current small collection, knifes that I’ll probably keep as I like them all in their own way. Next to these I have around 10 others less interesting ones, chinese stuff and so on, and eventually I will sell/give them away. And the Leatherman-like tools are also separate.
As you can see I am in general more interested in compact good quality gentlemen-style knives than in heavy tactical knives.
In this set I notice that I really have two favourites, they are as often in my pocket as the others combined. The question: can you guess which ones?
I put some comments below about the core set.
Left column, top to bottom:
- Kyocera ceramic pocket knife: my most expensive knife. Nicely made and the blade uses their top-end “HIP” ceramic process. It seems like it will never go dull. Very nice thing. Yes, you have to watch out with ceramic blades but in practice it is excellent for gentlemen-like usage.
- Mcusta Take with staminawood handle. My first “better” knife after the SAK.. Very nice quality, and I think very pretty.
- Spyderco Kiwi. Deliciously small and elegant. Doesn’t scare those who aren’t knife nuts. In fact if any knife could be called cute, it would be this one. Very practical in an office environment.
- Spyderco Dragonfly. What can I say? It’s a decent , well made spyderco, and it’s even lighter than the Kiwi.
- Mcusta money clip. Amusing gadget.
- Böker Subcom. Remarkably practical utility knife.
- CRKT turtle: another amusing gadget. (but the Mcusta money clip feels better) I might use it as a keychain knife were it not that I have to fly quite often.
Right column, top to bottom:
- Magnum M: a recent acquisition and it is really pretty ok as an everyday knife. Not the hardest steel but practical and surprisingly well put together. The big M button unlocks the blade.
- Fallkniven U2. So unassuming yet such an efficient cutting machine. The sharpness of it is almost scary. I should investigate more Fallkniven products.
- Mcusta-made Browining Ice Storm. Currently probably the best deal in sub $50 knives. It feels pretty special and it is good for a variety of uses.
- Kiku mini tanto: my one fixed blade. Lovingly made by the master artist. In my collection, this one is probably the closest to a custom knife.
- Of course, a Victorinox SAK. This is one of those with a locking blade. Everyone should have at least one SAK. Mandatory for travel (even if perhaps you want to add another knife as well). I am curious about the Wenger NewRanger series where some models can be opened with one hand.
- A real French Laguiole. Sublimely elegant and versatile. From all the knives here the one most suited to be used at the table.
- Spyderco Volpe. I really like the design (and build quality). The shiny finish is perhaps not for everyone, and the olive wood inlays make the knife even SMELL good.
- Opinel #10. Everyone should have at least one Opinel. This one is well suited as a kitchen knife.
Again, guess the two knives that are most often in my pocket! I will reply in a day or so.
ps what would I currently like to add: an Opinel 8 (it is on the way), a "Cabela's" Buck 110 is on the way a well, a Spyderco Delica or Caly (not the Kopa as it is too close to my dragonfly), a classic scandinavian Eka Masur folder, perhaps a CRK Mnandi, and/or a Klötzli gentlemen knife and also perhaps a CRKT Koji Hara Ichi if it convinces me in the shop: I recently played with a CRKT Gallagher glide lock gentlemen knife which is pretty but the quality didn’t convince me (blade not rigid enough). Feel free to give other ideas!
