Am a good research nerd by trade, but to give me a leg up can you guys make some suggestions for me. Would like a nice fixed traditional with leather belt sheath

Parameters looking for

- smaller knife max ~ 4 inch blade or less
- wood or linen scales
- lanyard hole
- leather sheath for belt
- hopefully $200 or less, around $150 range +\- 25%

Don't want anything to large or hunting looking, something can wear around EDC and not get stares or appear like Crocodile Dundee :)

I will figure out am sure but input from the pros like guys appreciated

Thanks !!!

What is the intended use for this fixed blade? Utlity, edc? Hunting? Bushcraft? What type of grind do you prefer? Convex? Hollow? Flat?

Buck 113. It is the fixed blade version of the folding 112 Ranger.

I'd suggest LT Wright or Battle Horse. I've had excellent experiences with both and have carried a Battle Horse Frontier Valley. LT's Patriot or Coyote would probably fit the bill just as well.

Another consideration would be a Hess Caper. Their blades are done by GEC, and many have reported positive experiences with their offerings. They offer their Caper in three sizes, so you'd be able to choose the one that fits your needs best if you like the style of the knife.

The Benchmade Hidden Canyon hunter might fit the bill. Maybe a little too small for you (2.67" blade) but nice S30V steel for about $115. There's also their Saddle Mountain Hunter and Saddle Mountain Skinner that are a little larger (4.25 and 4 inch blades.).

Another option would be to see if one of the makers on the forum could do something for you. Here is the knife I bought from Bill Akers of Backwoods Knives a few years ago. 3.5" blade in 1095 and willow burl scales. If you go with a more traditional, less expensive wood you might be able to get something in your price range.

Does the type of steel matter?

Looking through here may help a bit. Good luck with the hunt.

My vote and experience goes for Battle Horse Knives. I have a Brumby Lite knife that is fantastic. I also have a Lon Humphrey's Whitetail knife that pocket carries. L. T. Wright is another good on to look at.
Also another vote for Hess. I use one for dressing deer and can't tell you how sharp it is.

Another vote for Lt wright here. Great value. The Next Gen is a new mode that fits your specs. Good luck finding one!

Edit: I meant good luck on finding a knife you love in general, not that the Next Gen is hard to find. Just clarification. [emoji16]

May I suggest forum member JK Handmade Knives. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/830-JK-Handmade-Knives.
He offers multiple models that meet your criteria or can work with you to design your ideal knife. I've found him to be very reasonable and easy to deal with.
My Camp & Trail is exceptional and is very close to the criteria you've layed out.

Here it is again with a couple of smaller knives EDC size knives he made for me. Top to bottom: Camp & Trail, Custom, Mini Appalichia

I was going to suggest a Buck 102, but no lanyard hole.

Perhaps one of the Grohmanns?

#1 or #3 might do you well,

Here is a recently acquired #3 Forces Knife

In the price range, can be had in carbon or stainless, saber or flat grind.

Three different leather sheath options. Flapped and two different pouches,

A great general utility blade, that is decent at woodsy stuff too,

A quick shot For size reference,

If the Grohmanns don't float your boat, there is no denying that Backwoods is a beautiful knife.

Another option might be Hess Knives out of Gladstone Michigan. They make some fine small fixed blades.
The fit and finish is very nice. Right around $100.00 give or take a bit.

Ok guys, bit the bullet, probably the one the wife will shoot with me and ordered a LT Wright Next-gen with the brown mountain canvas scales, as well as a KSF pocket holster, damn, here goes the bank into the next collectible...watch out maybe be a knife or two soon in the sales forum, might have to recoup a bit :)

LV, I am going to get one of those #3's!!!!

am liking the grohmanns. how's it feel in hand, how's it cut

There are different models. Mine cut well.

Canadian Belt knives (in carbon)
D.H. Russell #4 Survival and a Grohmann #1 flat ground in micarta.

And then, the US made R Murphy Skinner. 1095 steel, very well made and and about $60.00. The handle ergonomics aren't quite as slick as the original but still a solid knife! Lots of wood choices available for the handle too. Standard is Zebrawood. No lanyard hole though....

R Murphy was the original supplier to Herters.
