Anybody have an opinion on the Guide Gear 10 x 10 teepee tent that Sportsmans Guide sells?
The price sure seems reasonable but is it something that will last one season then have to be replaced?
Or would I be better off with something like the Cabelas 10 x 10 Outback Lodge for 3 times the price?

Yep, that`s the one. But all I see is that he set it up in his basement for a few weeks. Is there some part of his blog I`m missing where he uses it outside?
Thanks.

Dave,

I posted some pictures and a write-up on one of the forums afterward also.

I think it was here in the Wilderness and Survival Skills forum in a post by Hollowdweller.

We pitched the tipi in the yard for several days and it rained/stormed at least three days in a row. The only water that got inside came from the open doors.

Let me see if I can find it. There'll be some additional pictures of it setup outside.

hope this is'nt considered a thread hijack.....

A few years back i was playing around with a 10' x 12' tarp, and i managed to score some hypalon squares with D rings attched to them (used for rafts) . I used Barge cement to attach one to the center of the tarp, let it cure, added a another one right underneath it as well, then riveted them togther ( like a sandwich). make sense so far? i then attached a paracord guy line to the outer D ring and tossed the line over a tree limb and pulled it up, i used a lead weight to keep it taut . I staked the corners of the tarp and clipped my flashlight to the inner D ring. Viola, a rather crude tipi with NO POLES . More of a tarp tipi but you get the idea. The neat part was at night, the tarp as white, and with the LED light inside it glowed like a full moon. made finding it easy after a midnite hike.

please dont mind my horrible attempt at drawing....

Interesting.
How much headroom did you have?
You said it was a few years ago, do you still use it and if not, why?
How did you get in and out?
What kind of tarp?
I`m liking this simple idea.

SG's site gives no specs about how "waterproof" it is.

Back when SG posted detailed specs, lots of their tents and tarps were touted as having 1000mm ! waterproofing. WOW!

Perhaps someone noted that a 999mm coating would not have been "waterproof" per gov't standards. And a 1000mm coating will go steadily below that with use. So SG was giving you the very, very least the law allows.

No way to know if this tent is something that will last without more information.

MidwestDave, I just ordered the Sportsman's Guide teepee tent. From what I seen it is not too bad. I plan to make a plywood wedge floor for it and install a military stove patch through the wall. I will probably get that small tent stove kit from Cabela's for $100. I will try and do a review with photo's once it arrives.
