Ignorant newbie here. I’ve done some research into the better steels that are commonly used as blade materials and I’ve crawled out of the darkness of total ignorance into the minimal, dim light of semi-ignorance. I’ve only been able to find limited introductory descriptions in a couple basic references I found.

Could anybody point me in the direction of more/better introductory descriptions/info of the different steels used for blade making? I need to do more and better research, but I haven’t been very successful in finding too much so far.

This is a decent quick reference graphic:

There’s a good app called Knife Steel Compostion by ZVISoft. It’s nothing fancy but it contains a great reference listing of all the blade steels I’ve wanted to learn about.

Unless you're looking to be able to rattle off the composition of a particular steel why not group them a bit and learn why makers use particular steels in that group.

I don’t think that top site exists
Your site was the one I was trying to remember unsuccessfully apparently. I guess I can never remember what it is from memory. Can you link your site.

All great sources except for this.

Its made up numbers that don't have anything to do with anything. "The 'working hardness' of VG-1 is 1.6."

That doesn't mean anything. Like saying "The toughness of AUS-8 is Wisconsin."
Right. I live in Wisconsin and we're at least S30V tough. Maybe tougher.
