Guide to using a stone to sharpen?

So I really would like to be less dependent on my big diamond sharpening rod in my kitchen. I have a sharpening stone, but the edge I get with it (sharpening a Cold Steel Spartan, I can certainly make it sharp with the diamond rod) is not satisfactory. I know it can be made sharper.
Are there any really good guides/tutorials out there?

Search around Youtube, there are a few members here that have some pretty nice video series. I'd also try John Juranitch's book.
