Guided Sharpener ala Lansky for Fixed Blades?

Unless you're talking about VERY LARGE or VERY SMALL blades, Lansky or Gatco will work just fine for most any blade up to 8" or so in length (without repositioning the clamp).

Spine thickness shouldn't be an issue at all, up to at least 1/4" (can use longer screws for the clamp if needed).

I use my Lansky clamp system on fixed blades 3/8 thick, and 6 inche blade length. I see no reason why it couldn't handle larger knives as well. You'd have to clamp the base down, or it'll probably fall over tho.

Long thin knives (kitchen) dont sharpen very well because you have to do the blade in sections (moving the clamp down the blade one or 2 times) or else the end of the blade bends away from your stone with VERY little pressure.

I use my Lanskey clamp system alot, if you have any questions send me an e-mail.

Will measure thickness and length of my bigger fixed blades when I get home tonight. Will send email with details then Brad Greulich. Thanks folks.
Edit: (This is good news for me. I'd been using the Spyderco Sharpmaker for many many years. In the last few months, intrigued by ZDP, I got folders from Spyderco to check them out. On the Sharpmaker, I had to apply extra pressure due to ZDP's hardness. This caused "flex" in the ABS base so that the edges I ended up with were entirely inadequate. Other steel's edges were actually lasting longer than the ZDP's! So I dug out my DMT Diamond Aligner Kit and hit paydirt. This system is good only for "small" knives and won't clamp even onto my "small" fixed blades. But I was impressed with the ease and speed with which I achieved a great cutting edge on ZDP using a "guided" system. So that directly led to my thought about the Lansky system for larger blades, fixed and folding. Perhaps even my 3G edged Fallknivens might now be improved! Long train of thought post over and out. Thank you folks.)

My DMT Aligner can clamp to almost any blade - have you tried loosening the large brass screw? I didn't have any problem sharpening my BK-7 with my Aligner.

Must be a different model. Mine's all plastic construction. No brass screw or metal anywhere. To give an idea: WON'T fit on Fallkniven A1, A2, F1 and Tre Kronor. WILL fit on Fallkniven WM1, Spyderco Rock Salt, Aqua Salt. That's just for the blade thickness. Blade length is another issue. Even the Aqua Salt is too long for my Aligner.

Edit: Forgot you don't HAVE to affix the clamp at base of blade. Clamped midway along the spine could work on Aqua Salt. It's about 4.5-4.75 inches long in the blade.

I love the GATCO for everything from small pocket knives up to my 10" chefs.

GATCO Professional + extra fine hone + ultimate finishing hone + stropping = sharp
