Systems like Wicked Edge, Edge Pro, etc offer replacement stones sold as a consumable. Doing a lot of research like most folks do before plucking down there hard earned cash. My question is this, how long do the stones last? I know it's probably a YMMV thing but inkjet printers and their consumable cartridges come to mind. Your thoughts...

I have Edge Pro Apex and use it with the original stones, as well as diamond and silicon carbide stones added post hoc.
Aluminum oxide stones of Edge Pro seem to have strong binder and last quite long. Their coarse silicon carbide stones go away quick, so I replaced them with those from another source.

Stones mounted on aluminum plates are indeed expensive. But you can buy aluminum plates without stones (stone blanks), and mount and replace bare stones, which are much cheaper. I use silicon carbide stones (~$4 each) from Congress Tools.

Diamond stones, which I got from Gritomatic, would last long.

Also, you can buy polishing tape mounts from Edge Pro and put cheap silicon carbide sandpaper from coarse to fine.

Thanks for the replies. Read the reviews on Amazon, users made the same claims about the courser grit, in that they tend to wear quickly versus the finer grits that can last a long time.

I also have a DMT aligner. I was told that their diamond stones should last quite long.

Once the plates start to appreciably lose aggressiveness and their irregular surfaces begin to wear even, they can always be repurposed to some degree by slotting them further down in a progression.

Choose a sharpening system with no proprietary stone holder, and you will not depend on one vendor.

Thanks for your reply, I see that your HAPSTONE v7 will be released mid week? Where is the Hapstone produced? Russia, says on your website.

When the EdgePro stones wear out you can remove them from the aluminum backer with a little heat. Keep it under 400f and you won't remove any of the temper from the aluminum.
