Guided Worksharp for FFG knives?

Hi all,

Have any of you tried this sharpener? Do you like it?
Does the clamp work with all knives? Specifically full flat ground knives?

My ability to sharpen knives free hand has diminished for some reason. I used to do a beautiful job on my bevels, but I seem to butcher my sharpening jobs anymore. Thus my search for a guided sharpener.

Should I consider another sharpener?

Thanks all

Wouldn't it be better (and cheaper) to simply practice freehand more?

I mean, unless you really just feel the urge to buy something... I can understand that.

Don't have a ton of free time these days. Also, as I said, I am getting worse at the freehand. I have a couple nice knives I do  not want to goober up because I can't sharpen well.

It's not really an urge to buy something. I'd rather put that $ into other things, but I want to be able to maintain my edges while keeping the bevel looking nice.

I bought that Worksharp and a Lansky 5 stone system a couple weeks ago, I returned both of them to the store.
I felt the Worksharp did a better job than the Lansky.
While I had them I ordered Ruixin pro RX-008
I think the Ruixin did a better job than the Worksharp and the Lansky.
About a week later I ordered a TSPROF Kadet Black from Gritomatic
I'm VERY satisfied with the Kadet Black.

$63 will be hard to get past the wife, let alone $400! Haha

Thank you though! But you think the work sharp was an okay peice?

Yeah, my coordination gets worse as I get older.

I've never had any trouble with the WSPAKS on a FFG, but a false edge on the spine can make it hard to clamp the blade securely. Strategically applied bits of masking tape can help.

The big problem with clamps like this that you cannot get a very acute edge angle on a narrow blade because the clamp gets in the way and you end up sharpening the clamp. For example, I cannot get a 15 degree edge on a typical paring knife with my WSPAKS. For that, I use a Ken Onion grinder. I still do not know a good way to get a 10 degree edge.

The WSPAKS works fine on a lot of knives. I have thought about getting a fancier system, but I am not yet convinced that any of them are worth the price.

I don't have one, but there were a lot of reports when they were released with people not getting enough clearance of small blades in the clamp. I think there may be a new clamp to rectify this, but it is another added cost. Sharpening companies all love the old " Oh You Want Fries With That ". By the time you add all the extras to the actual sharpener they get very expensive.

I did look at what tool would be best for them and chose the precision adjust for cost and upgrade path from factory and 3D printed after market.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Very helpful.

I may just try and find a less expensive guided system since this one definitely does not sound like the end-all.

I just want pretty bevels and sharp edges, damn it! 🤣

If you were already used to freehanding on bench stones, you might consider the inexpensive DMT Aligner clamp for around $15, give or take. It'll do fine with FFG blades and won't break the bank. It'll give you that little bit of extra angle stability without really hampering your existing technique or forcing the learning of a new technique. That's probably the best thing about this clamp when used with a bench stone - it essentially emulates the freehand technique most typically used in bench stone sharpening. A DMT video is below, demonstrating how the clamp is used with a bench stone. Now, as mentioned previously, if blades are very small, like a pen blade in a traditional slipjoint, most any clamped system might have trouble allowing sufficient clearance to keep the clamp from hitting the stone. But for most knives with blade widths down to 1/2" or so, or anything larger, a clamp like this one will work.

I got it and it does a great job for me.. i use it on my Chris Reeve, Protech, Microtech, Benchmade, Spyderco, and many more… Just need to get right angle….. all my knives slice paper very thin!👍🏻

Hey Billy!! I have WSPA and for me, it works great!! I’m not happy unless my knives can slice through magazine paper or shave my arm hair😂😂… and the worksharp get me that edge! Good luck pal!👍🏻
