I just started trying to learn to play guitar. I bought an electric guitar last night and a couple of books.

I'm just looking for a good guitar forum. Like the guitar equivalent of bladeforums.com.

Thanks

Hehe- here's my new axe:

After selling my last acoustic a few months ago, I saw an article in Make magazine about making a cigar-box guitar.

I did a bit of research and decided to give it a try, and this is the result. There's quite a lot of info on the web, I have a lot of sites bookmarked.

Bo Diddley would be proud.

Congrats on taking up a great hobby.
I've been trying to teach myself guitar for the past 2 years.
One of the best sites, for beginners and more advanced players alike is
http://www.guitarnoise.com/
Lotsa great beginners lessons, and a beginner's forum.
Good luck.

I used to play all the time, and was a regular on the Harmony Central Guitar Forum, which imploded a couple of times and came back a couple of times and even had a secret forum kinda like the pirate's cove. The survivors of the last implosion decided to build their own place to hang out and it has been pretty stable for the past few years, although I don't really play or participate in the forums any more. I can vouch for the good quality of the people who are still there from the old days though. Click on the link below and tell 'em Torz sent ya.

Thanks for all the links, I'm about to check them out right now.

You should look around for a good instructor. You can get lessons for 20-25.00 for 30 mins a week of instruction. It really makes a difference, things that are difficult to gain from books just by themselves. One of the best books available is "The Complete Guitarist" by Richard Chapman.
by the way, what County are you in?

p.s. check this out...

I've been considering taking lessons. My piano teacher also teaches guitar, I thought I'd try and wing it first since I know how to read music and some theory stuff. Just trying to apply it to the guitar, which I'm learning is a lot different then piano, not everything is layed out in front of you so plainly with the guitar.

Suffolk County. I live very close to SUNY Stony Brook if you have any idea where that is

I'm in Ulster CO.

If you can read music and play the piano,it should aid you in learning the guitar.Actually some things about the guitar are easier than the piano, like the scales. It's just easy to pick up bad habits without an instructor, especially in the begginning.Good Luck with your new instrument.

p.s. by the way, what guitar did you wind up buying?

Nice guitar.

I picked up a Schecter, I'm not sure on the model exactly, it says Diamond Series on the headstock. It sounds really nice though for the money(about $400).

yes, they do. I have a really nice Schecter eletric guitar, that looks very much like a PRS. In fact, you'd have to look close to tell otherwise. Sounds good too. Of course, I can't play a lick, but what the heck. :)

TOMBSTONE,

Hey, LeatheryBird. I play little at all. I own two pretty decent guitars( the above mentioned Schecter and a sweet Takamine acoustic/electric with Koa back and sides), and have taken a few lessons, but really haven't devoted enough time to practicing to make any difference. My fingertips have NO calluses, if that answers your questions. :(

It was made in 2005.I special ordered it from the factory in the configuration I wanted.Pearl pick guard, special finish (cobalt blue) seymour duncan hot A** humbucker and a couple single coils.I had the volume & tone controls replaced with solid shafts and changed out the knobs. After almost having a close call with my guitar strap,I installed Schaller strap locks instead of the regular strap knobs.

I saw the Seymour Duncan in it,that's why I asked.
Cobalt blue finish looks so nice with the Pearl pickguard.
Beautiful and classy guitar.
