will this give me a knife that isnt shiney? im trying to figure out a way to put a permanent coat on a knife taht makes it black or almost black and doesnt have a finish that shines in the light. i guess the best way to describe it is the type of finish that is on alot of shotguns. where its a black finish but is basically flat. i thought about sometime trying a powdercoat fininish on a knife but i dont know how that will work either.

the look im going for is a flat black or close to flat black so that it has no shine to it and is also black or close to black.

You could try Body Cote. Google them on the web. They do almost all of the coatings for the knife factories. If there is a facility close to you, you might be able to get them to through a few knives in with a factory order. I've never dealt with them, and have no idea if they work with smaller volumes. But they definitely have the equipment and know how to coat a knife just the way that you want it coated.

A lot of the guns that you see with a low gloss or flat finish are bead blasted and then hot blued.

jlmetcalf hit it right on the head. I used to blue guns for a gunshop. The only way to get the dark flat blackish/blue color is to sand blast. To buff it out with a course grit compound will do it to some extent but not as well.

However, you may concider this, when you proceed as mentioned above, it will show marks rather easy. If you want a durable long lasting, or tough finish, i would suggest a flat black finish like duracoat. It is made by lauer custom weaponry...
