Gun hammer thumb stud removal?

My apologies if I'm identifying the part in question incorrectly, but the seemingly thumbstuds on the Gun hammer...can they be removed, or are they integral to the knife staying open? I have an old CUDA Maxx stiletto and the "studs" don't feature in opening the blade, and I rely more on the flipper.

This looks like a great knife and if the studs aren't needed I'd love to remove them if possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the thumbstuds act as the stop pins. You should not remove these.

Makes sense as that's how they work on the Maxx. Thanks for the feedback though; was trying to figure on getting a knife that looked and acted as close to an auto as I'm able to own in Canada. Not in the cards it would seem.

Canada must have some funny knife laws. Why can't you own a Gunhammer that's not automatic to begin with? Do they classify flippers as automatics in Canada?

Yeah. You kind of need them on the GH. Actually, the Cuda Maxx looks to be the same, thumbstuds act as stop pins. Here is an image, not mine.

harkamus,

I did a road trip this past summer down to Oregon and nothing showed me more than that how silly the knife laws are up here. I'm sorry if I didn't come across clear but what I meant to say was that I could own an assisted GH however doing a slight mod to remove the "thumbstuds" to make it look like a full on auto would have been cool. I did something similar with a Kershaw boa and despite there being no button release it looks like an auto.

Just a simple esthetics thing and has nothing to really do with functional usage on my end I guess.

Ah, ok. I gotcha now.

Problem is that you can't do that since they're acting as stop pins. Glad to know you could own it though. They're great knives.

Thanks to all. New 3D Ti Framed 4 inch custom..

This is a DDR custom.

I love how you colored the torx screws to match the copper anno. I love these little touches.

Hi Darrel,

That is one beautiful folder. How does the knife lock up? What parts are made of what materials? I'm interested in the locking mechanism, the scales, clip and if it's tip-up only, the blade steel & RC plus anything you might care to add.

Thank you much! :)

It's a liner lock with a .1 inch titanium lock bar. The handles are machined titanium with the latest generation of what DDR calls ETAC grip. Blade steel is s30v on that one, though DDR offers other steels on request. Clip location is as you see pictured, but he can mount them in other locations for buyer preference. RC rating, I'm not sure, but IIRC it's 59-60 RC.

A model similar to that is what I'm getting custom made.

Is it a 1/2 or more of the way nested ti linerlock like a Spyderco Military or a framelock covered up with a scale. I don't undertand ti linerlocks & never seen one except my Military - which they say is titanium but looks like SS.

The Millie lock is okay but not supe confince inspiring like a full framelock. Is it as strong of a lock as a RIL type framelock on a Sebenza for e.g? Are there pics of his lock method, displayed anywhere? Thanks harkamus! :)

It's a nested liner in the sense that the lock bar "nests" inside the titanium liner. The liner lockbar is actually a separate piece that you can remove, a plus being that if the lockbar gets too worn over years of use, that you can simply just order another lockbar from Darrel and just replace it yourself. The lockbar of the HTM Gunhammer is .9 inches thick and it's massive by liner lock standards. The linerlock of the Millie isn't confidence inspiring because it looks anorexic being so thin. However, the Millie is rated as a hard use folder by Spyderco and many people will attest to that.

Here's a blown up pic of the lockbar from my own HTM Gunny. Keep in mind the one from the custom Gunhammer, such as the ones you see pictures of in this thread, is .1 inch, so slightly thicker than that of the HTM version. Is it as strong as a framelock? Probably not, but only because on a framelock you can squeeze your hand together to wedge the lockbar even tighter. Of course, unless you're prying with a linerlock and applying torque in just the right way, you won't disengage the lock. Personally, I hate framelocks. Then again, I don't pry with knives.

EDIT: If you have ever handled a Zero Tolerance 0350 and saw how thick the liner lockbar is, well the HTM Gunny lockbar is even thicker. The custom Gunhammer lockbar is thicker still.

harkamus, that looks like 2 thick slabs of G-10 and thick linerlock. What am I missing? I'd love to see the insides of the custom Darrel built up above. I'd like to purchase a knife like that if I could see it or handle it. I'm having trouble getting a hold of Mr. Ralph??

It's aluminum for the handle material. Call him like I said. He shouldn't be too hard to reach. Both scales are machined on the inside. One side is machined out for the actual lockbar. The other side is machined for an assist mechanism. That way you can order a non-assisted version and just drop in the assist mechanism if you want to in the future. Conversely, you can order an assisted version and take out the mechanism.

Give him a call.

I appreciate the info on your DDR harkamus, you sound like you own more than one of Darrel's knives? What others do you own, if any?

Does Darrel make many flippers? Is that what that little round thingy is on his folders? Is that what the "gunhammer" name means?

I'd like to meet Darrel and buy a knife, we're very close geographically but I don't feel comfortable calling him uninvited, as that message and number were put there for you.
