Blackjack Kukri
looks nice
may check it out again tomorrow

Tiny khukuri
Think 6" AK with no fuller
and a drilled & slotted cho.
Come in leather covered wood sheath.
Big horn handle (compared to kages katne)
with brass buttcap peened on.
It's been cleaned up on a fine belt or just sandpaper.
Peaked spine like on regular size khuks.
Interesting.
Does not look like a paper cutter to me,
And seems too big for karda.
? Maybe a biggish karda with sheath added later?

Any ideas.

-------------------------
addition:

Take a heavy metal artificial joint (ball side)
take the ball as a grip,
then cut a groove to index the front finger position,
then sharpen an edge on the rod that anchors the joint into the bone.
Don't know what to call it,
but it would be worth having as a conversation piece if nothing more.
Very interesting item.

Sounds kinda like the "Biltong Khukhuri" that this guy is selling. Sized between an HI Kagas Katne and an HI Bilton...I bought one from this same ebay feller for $8.95 a while back. It's cute...no brass buttcap, though. Makes a snazzy neck knife.

Actually it looks -much- different from this 'other' biltong // kages katne

RE the artificial-ball-joint knife mentioned above.

This sample is similar to the modified item I saw.

Wonder what the kamis would do with this?

I handled one yesterday. Nicer than I thought, almost more like a Bolo? Looks useable...

DDean,

Did you see that Blackjack from the Jerico knives booth? When were you there? You wouldn't happen to be pretty tall with a goatee and glasses would you? Their was a guy checking out the BJ Khuk while I was at the Jerico booth and I mentioned I had a couple HI khuks and he said he alos had a couple. Was that you?

Don't know.

before lunch Sat 15 seconds, after lunch sun 1 minute, not sure it was the same booth both times.

no. Average or slightly shorter. Glasses & full beard.

no again

But I think it was the fellow I asked John Powell about
in another thread today. I spoke with this man at his booth
& he was very knowledgable & personable.
I had stopped at his booth to examine a couple of
real, old Chinese dao (sabers).

Bought a couple of oldish khuks (17" & 19" oal),
a couple of nice other knives,
a couple of straight razors to make slicing tools for leather/paper/etc,
a ols-standard 12"-bladed bayonet because it had a nice fuller
(can't recall the designation off-hand ?? ZV-24 maybe),
and a couple of tourist junk khuks.

One of those junk khuks is going to be sharpened
using the peening method recently described for scythes.
Just an experiment.

Pix & specs soon. :D

Naw wasn't you then, it was around threeish at the Jerico knives booth and this guy just walked up. The Jerico booth had the whole line-up of Blackjack stuff. Got a couple Darrel Ralph knife kits offa him. Good show, guns were a little pricey and couldn't find the stinkin' 1911 parts I was lookin' for, but otherwise it was good. My dogs were barkin' after walking that thing all day. It's a two day affair to see everything. We had to skip a couple aisles and we were there from 8:30-3:30 .

I was there a total of maybe 6 hours & walked only half the aisles.
And that was without handling very many swords or other blades,;
as I had originally intended.
Last hour each day was devoted to randomly dashing around
hoping to find something interesting.
Big, big, big show.
And I never glanced at a gun; always with the eye open for edges.

It's kinda funny as many times as I've been to the Wanem.Wanamac..Big show, I never noticed how many knife dealers/makers where there. I always went for the guns. Saw some outstanding knives from some locals, one guy, John Martin, was from Okmulgee and another, can't remember his name, was from Norman.

Big, big, big show.

There will be another one by Wanenmacher next April.:D Perhaps I will get to go to that one.

The Wanenmacher Shows are the only ones worth attending IMO. The other shows are much, much smaller and without the variety. And the cost of getting in plus the parking fee just doesn't make them worthwhile to me.:grumpy:

Yeah, I griped about the $10 it cost to get in all day. But I did get my moneys worth. I remember when it was around $5 or so, and then I usually didn't have to pay cus my wife's uncle had a table and he'd get us in.

Parking fee gone now,
but to come the 2nd day the re-entry stamp doesn't do it.
Got to pay $10 again.

Starting a new thread for my purchases,

since the title can't be changed

and it said "not bought"

You mentioned sharpening one of those khuks with the peening method described on the "Scythe Supply" site. It will be interesting to see how that goes. Following your earlier post on scythes, I ordered a "Bush Blade" from that outfit since it looked like it would be good for brush.

Well, the blade came yesterday and it appears like it will be equal to the task. Since I didn't get a peening anvil, it will have to be sharpened up with a scythe stone initially, but that shouldn't hurt it much.

These scythes aren't quite like khuks though. They are entirely hand forged out of what looks like a sheet of steel about 1/4" thick, and gradually thinned out in the blade to nearly paper-thin at the edge.

I had to grind on the tang a bit to get it to fit on Grandpa's snath, and this was an interesting process. There was a bucket of water handy for cooling the tang, but it never got that hot. However, I needed the water anyway because the resultant sparks set my bench on fire twice. I have done considerably more grinding on lawnmower blades and never run into this problem.

The stone I'm going to use is one of Grandpa's - about 12" long and similar to a coarse Carborundum stone. This is what everybody used when I was a kid, and I never saw a guy pounding on his scythe with a hammer. I'm definately going to try the peening method, but the resultant thin edge might not be the best for "chopping" khuks.

Hopefully a picture will be attached with the blade next to a 16.5" Chiruwa for comparison.

I wasn't planning to get it that thin on the khuk.
We'll see.
I'd lay even odds that the india junk blade breaks
within half a dozen good strikes.
[ yup......got the safety glasses. ]

Looks like you got the pic display worked out.
