Hi. Wondering what your opinions/experiences are on lights mounted on guns to be used for home defense; both pistols and shotguns, but i'm primarily interested in shotgun lights.

My 12 is a Mossberg Pump.

Also, where can I get these lights?

Thanks

Check out the Insight Technology M-series. They are sold thru cop shops and also all over the net. I haven't looked, but I suspect Botach has them. They b/w $100 - $130.

Surefire also makes one, but it's much more expensive.

While teaching a lowlight CQB class this came up last night. I dig weapon dedicated lights on longuns but not on pistols. There is no way to control a long gun and a light at the same time without it being mounted. In most instances I prefer to clear a house with two pistols and a light. I like and E2e with a lanyard on my left wrist and my 8X in a bezel down carrier on my belt. This allows me to go between two lights and take advantage on right and left hand cover. Most will crowd cover and extend the muzzle of a pistol into a uncleared room. This will happen even more with a long gun. Just my $.02

SureFire makes one?!
Just one?!!
Nah!

SureFire Shotgun Forend WeaponLights:

For the Mossberg 500:
622FA or 622FGA (6V)
922FA or 922FGA (9V)

For the Mossberg 590:
623FA or 623FGA (6V)
923FA or 923FGA (9V)

For the Mossberg 500 & 590 with 14" Barrels:
621FA or 621FGA (6V)
921FA or 921FGA (9V)

Obviously, you can upgrade with an LM90 to use the same Bezel & Lamps as your SureFire M3 CombatLight.

The advantage of a Dedicated Forend is that your light is always on your weapon. It is neat, with no exposed wires, the switches have been located for simple, effective use, and the whole unit has been designed for the abusive life on the shotgun. These Forends are in use the World over, and have been for years.

I have a Remington 870 with a dedicated Surefire forearm. I also have the M-3 Illuminator for my Glock 19. My preference for a shotgun mounted light would be the Surefire over the M-3 with the adapter. The Surefire light is the best out there and gets the job done. I was sighting in the trak lock sights at the range and because of not resting the gun far enough forward on the rest the light hit the rest and broke off (definitely user error). I sent it to the company and they sent me a brand new unit no charge. It is extremely durable and will last a long time. Its nice to know that you have a source of light as soon as you pick up the weapon.

I have a SureFire forend light mounted on my 12 gauge Remington 870 home defense shotgun. I have never had to use it for real, but I have been very pleased with it during practice. The SureFire is well designed, practical, and reliable. (I swapped out the bulb assembly for their P61 that produces twice the illumination, at the cost of shorter battery life.)
