I am a total novice when it comes to guns, but I had an opportunity to shoot skeet and targets this past weekend with: Beretta (I think) automatic .20 guage shotgun, over-under double barreled shotgun, 30-.06 with scope, .22 with scope (FUN!), .38 Taurus superlight (titanium), Glock 22. Lots of BOOM! :) I did REALLY well shooting skeet (75% or better) and I['ve never even picked a gun up before, much less shot one. I have zero interest in hunting, but I could see myself having a great time with long distance target shooting and skeet shooting, as well as target training with pistols. Anyplace I should look in particular for a good gun at a good price?

Doubt you have easy access as we do in Florida. Here they're advertised in the paper.People sell them at garage sales & flea markets. Our county has 3 or 4 gun shows annualy . No paperwork, cash & carry unless you buy from a licensed dealer.
Last week I bought a pistol that would fit your inital needs. I was having a smoke before going into the show & another old geezer sat beside me with a pistol case. After trading gun talk ,I asked what he had. He said it was a Ruger 45/22 semiautomatic. I looked at it & asked him what he wanted for it. $200 closed the deal then & there. The retail price was close to $400 & since it was cherry I was satisfied.
It holds 10 .22 long rifle bullets & is one of the least expensive target shooters to operate. Mine had the manual & an extra clip in the case too.

Safe shooting !

Guns Shows and Wal-Mart. If you can find what you want at Wal-Mart, rifle/shotgu it will be cheaper than any other retail store. I worked at Dick's for a while and they had pretty good prices too. You might want to check out www.gunbroker.com and then you can have it shipped to an FFL in your area. Also, don't count out Gander Mountain if there is one nearby. My dad just got a kimber 84 from them for 700. Getting pistols is a little trickier since many places won't carry them. Ruger .22 pistols are great options, walther p-22 is really really fun, but not quite as accurate. Also, some of the browning buckmarks are quite nice. Good luck buy a .22 rifle and pistol and then go from there.

Shooting is my favorite pastime. My best advice I can give you is to join a club, hang at the range with a 22. and shoot everyones pieces until you find the one.

Seriosly try it. I know at my club we are allways open to newbies and let them shoot everything.

Thanks, guys. I really liked the auto shotgun. I'm pretty sure it was a beretta. .20 gauge for sure, held one shell in the barrel + another three. All black with a synthetic stock. Badass! :) If anything, I'll probably wait and go to gun shows with friends. I really don't have the $$ right now to spend, anyway, but I didn't know if there was a preferable place/way to buy guns for relatively cheap prices. Thanks!

Hey Steve....

Welcome to the Great world of firearms..
Now that you have the bug,, it won't be long before you start getting the gun itch... Pretty soon you'll have gun safes filled with them..

As far as having Zero interest in hunting...

Come on down to Ontario on a black bear hunt with us,, that Zero interest will soon be gone, and you'll be killing critters hand over fist...

Eric, good to hear from you. Call my lack of interest in hunting a karma thing. Just not for me. But, shooting a target from a thousand yards out would be GREAT fun for me. Zen and the art of sniper shooting, anyone? :)

On this topic, what is a good .22 rifle that could be outfitted with a decent scope to get into as a first rifle? Or should I look for something else? The .22 seems like a good choice because the ammo seems to be the cheapest. I tried to do a little of my own research, but the .22 seems to be the CRKT of the rifle world... everyone tears them apart and mods them! Plus there was the difference of center fire and rimfire, etc. Maybe I'll hit the 'brary and see if there are any gun books that may clarify some of this stuff for me... the RUger 10/22 seemed to be well loved, but looking on Ruger's site I couldn't even find that model.

Sheesh, I thought there were a lot of knife models out there... One look at Taurus's webpage had my head ready to explode! ;)

Hey Chiro...
Nice hearing from you as well..
missed you are Wolverine last year...

As for the hunting thing..
Yaaaa it's not for everyone I understand that...

I just prfer eating meat that I shot...

Anyway,, as far as .22s are concerned..

Yaa man,, thats a good way to start..

What I would suggest is a stock Ruger 10/22 and build from their..
you can get some Real nice attachments for the ruger 10/22..

An upgrade from there would be a custom stock and heavy target barell....
50-200 rd mags are easily had for this rifle as well..

If you want to spend a little more,,and have some fun doing it..
Grab an AR-15 and a .22 kit..

Using the AR15 as the platform, you can get upper kits that are swapped out in minutes that allow you to change from 5.56 to .22, 9mm, to .50 cal BMG easily..
There is even a kit out for a belt fed AR15 in 5.56 as well as .22..

The AR15 is an Awesome platform to build on as add ons are everywhere and you can dress it up or down however you like...

Now,, Actually I believe that full auto is now legal in MI,, so you could go the extra step,, get your paperwork done and by an M16 select fire and do all the same $hit to it...

Cost you a little more to get running,, but if Full Auto is Available and legal for you,, I'd snap that up in a heartbeat...

Once you have that and a good platform,, the skys the limit,,and one gun will do litterally many different things....

All depends on how much you want to spend..
If it's budget you are on the 10/22 is the way to go...

But seriously consider going AR/M16 platform,, you'll Frigging love it...

What I would suggest is a stock Ruger 10/22

I'll second that I think between my friends and I we each have 3-4. The long barreled rifle version of it is my favorite stock, runs about 199 or so at walmart extremely accurate. The carbine model is nice too. Lots of options out there I think my favorite is the 16" carbon fiber barrel one my friend has. It is light as a feather. Savage makes some really reasonable bolt action .22 rifles that are accurate and inexpensive. The marlin model 60 is pretty nice also, but the 10/22 is nicer. Rimfires are the cheapest and best for cheap fun shooting. There are so many types of ammo out there for .22lr. I'd say stick with autoloaders for straight fun shooting. As far as scopes, I've seen everything from red dot sights to straight 20x target scopes on 10/22's. Red Dot sights and eotech sights are fun to play around with, but may cost quite a bit more than the rifle. The bushnell legend, and trophy series are all decent scopes that can be had for around 100 + or - depending on power, obj, etc. Probably the next jump in quality is around 200 with a leupold rifleman, bushnell elite, burris, etc.... Look for these things during hunting season because many stores will off huge discounts.

Ruger 10/22's are good but I'd get a Marlin 795 (better trigger). If accuracy is your thing get the Marlin 7-shot bolt action (unless you want an Anschutz). In a shotgun I'd scout pawn shops for a good used Beretta Silver Pidgeon over/under or in an auto I'd go with a Benelli. You'll probably want a good centerfire rifle too I'd go with a Ruger mini-14 or Bushmaster or Colt AR-15 in .223 just because they are fun. If you're interested in handguns go with Colt 1911s or Smith and Wesson Revolvers. And yeah highpowers, SIGs, HKs and Beretta 92/96s are just fine too.

for a first .22 a bolt action is a good way to go. marlin makes some inexpensive models sold at wally world. don't be fooled by the price they're good guns. the ruger 1022 is awesome, i've had several over the years and they have served me well. if you go to a gun show it's improtant to take someone with you that you trust and knows about guns. be careful about buying a gun from an individual since if it turns up hot you'll lose the purchase price if your lucky or might end up in jail while they sort it out. shooting is a lot of fun just remember the bullet comes out of the hole very fast. be careful, later, ahgar

If you're looking for any handguns...

The Ruger 89 and 95 are great for 9mm starter pistols. They're fairly clunky, so I don't know if I'd consider one of them for CCW.

I'd lean away from the S&W Sigmas, I purchased one as my first, and returned it within 2 months. Very long trigger pull, enough that I couldn't get conistent with it, but an overall lightweight polymer frame.

I like the Springfield XD 9mm, which is similar to the Glock 9mm's.... one thing that I really liked with the Springfield XD, was that it had a trigger safety, like the Glocks, and also had a "beavertail type grip safety" somewhat similar to the 1911's. I think when one is starting to get into shooting, that that addition of the safeties are a nice feature to allow one to get comfortable around the firearms. That's what kept me from getting a Glock 19 initially, but now I don't think its an issue.

I agree further on the Ruger 22's, fantastic guns, you can't beat them for plinking, with 500 rounds of 22 ammo very very cheap. The only issue is that you'll end up doing alot of Magazine reloading, as you can easily go through 500 rounds without really thinking about it.

I forgot to add... if you don't have good stores in your area, you ought to consider a few of these sites below that are located in Kentucky.

Here are a couple places to consider that I'm familiar with. I'm not trying to advertise or direct you to order from them, but just providing a few different places to consider that have pretty good pricing.

I know that Gilberts Guns does some stuff on Gunbroker, or the other gun auction site as well.
www.gilbertsguns.com

But if you are looking for Glocks, or AKs , I reccomend KY Imports
www.kyimports.com
Glock 19 OD- $449.99 NEW
Glock 17- $359.00 Used
Glock 26- $439.00 NEW

Some of their stuff is hit or miss in terms of pricing, but the firearms typically used in Law Enforcement have good discounts.

or even
www.budsgunshop.com

They are all reasonable, and KY Imports has the best Glock Prices I've seen in a long time.

And if you want to be a part of that, I'd suggest finding used and cheap Ruger 10/22.
Then go over to rimfirecentral.com and mod it to your hearts content. These are probably the easiest guns to mod for a non-gunsmith that there is. Check them out!!

Shooting is a very fun and rewarding past time. I have shoot all my life and am a safty NAZI as my friends call me. I have never been present when there was an accadental discharge or any sort of mishap because of such. I have friends who like you were very interested in firearms after they used one of mine. I support this as best I can, I just hate the way some of these guys handle there guns. I am not saying you will do anything wrong, i am mentioning this because I hope you the best of luck. these people seem 100% ok with the fact that they just swept the muzzle of there firearm past my head "because it wasn't loaded". or my brothers friend who brought his 870 into my house to show me then as he starts to hand it to me mentions its loaded. I tell him to unload it wich he did not know how to do then he proceeded to point it at me while he looked at it. I told him to give me the gun id unload it then he figured it out an pumped out 3 -4 shells one of wich was in the chamber. I will not ever shoot with this guy again. best of luck to you and I can highly reccoment the 10/22 as well. mine shots a group you can cover with a quarter at 100 yards.

10/22 or a Bolt action cz 452 special or trainer is awesome... Careful though you think knives are addictive? oh boy ;)
