Gun Permits in NYC

I would really like to get a gun at some point as I like target shooting. Currently I am living with my parents, and my mom would kill me if I got one so this is not an immediate thing. Rather I am just doing some basic research, and maybe starting the license process so when I move out I am good to go.

Anyway I think the best would probably be a full CCW. From what I have been reading it seems like it is difficult if not impossible to get one in NYC, well I am currently living in Queens. Is this true? Would I be better off just getting a type that allows me to own and travel with the gun to go to a range? I am not really very interested in carrying CCw anyway, I just figured that if it was possible to get the permit, and not that much of a cost difference I would like the option.

As I understand it I need to go down to 1PP to start the process. Would I need to go there and get the application, fill it out, get all of the required extras, and then return it there? Or is there some way that I could do it in a more local office?

Lastly, would it be advisable to get this before I move out? I am just thinking that as it seems like it can take up to six months, I might as well get the ball rolling. My only concern would be what happens when I do move out? How difficult/much of a hastle is it to get my address information changed?

Thanks in advance for any experiences from those who have already done this.

NYC is very anti-gun. If you want to get the bottom line, contact NYC Police head quarters at One Police Plaza. But, don't expect civility; they tend to get brutally dense and excited whenever they hear the word "handgun".

Erik, try dropping Nakano 2 an email or a PM. He's a member here in the forum and he runs a shooting range in Brooklyn, I think. I'm sure he'll have all the info you need. In order to get a CCW for NYC (all 5 boroughs), you essentially have to be a politician, celebrity, be involved with firearms (dealer, shooting range, etc.), be involved with the transport of large amounts of cash and other high dollar value items such as jewelry, or be a judge. You'll probably win the lottery sooner than you can get a CCW for NYC. You can apply for a target shooting or home defense permit. Takes a while, though, but those aren't impossible to get.

It's one license now, no longer two different classification. One other requirement is that you must a member of one of the certified gun ranges in NYC. It's much easier to get one in any of the other counties in NY. Unforunately, NYC doesn't honor any of them....

I recommend moving to Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Pennsylvania (or farther) and never going back if you wish to be a gun owner. Even for those lucky and privileged few who can get licenses to actually carry, NYC (and to a lesser extent NY state) and NJ are very hostile toward gun rights.

Handguns are legally tough to get in NYC.
Long arms are another story.
Call 311 and ask for the number of the Firearms Control Board in your borough.

You're not kidding! :D

I got my CWP about 15 years ago and it was a breeze. If I remember correctly, there are only several restrictions (such as being a convicted felon, are mentally unstable, a drug/alcohol abuser, among not many others...something about domestic abuse comes to mind) and if they don't apply to you, a CWP can not be withheld from you for more than 30 days. I had mine in less than 15.

I'd like to see a federal CWP...I'd like to travel with a trusty companion!

Yeah, that's my pipe dream too. I don't think it will ever happen, but it is our constitutional right. Since I live in Illinois, it's not likely I'll see CCW anytime soon/ever.:grumpy:  :thumbdn:

Move to Florida. My Florida Concealed Weapons Permit is good for any weapon I can conceal. It's also good in 24 states due to reciprocity.

There's not much in Fla. to make me want to live there, other than the favorable CCW laws. I don't like hurricanes, cockroaches the size of beagles, alligators, snakes, mosquitos, heat, humidity, old folk who drive 20mph in the left lane with their right turn signals on for 5 miles, humidity, OJ Simpson, heat, Santa Claus wearing shorts underneath a palm tree, hurricanes, and oh yeah... heat and humidity.

Don't worry, I may still visit and spend my tourist dollars there.:p

Those are Boston drivers that you are describing. And most of em aren't old. :grumpy:

At least they don't wear spandex.:D

Well I pretty much new a CCW would be impossible to get, but I don't really need or want one at this point. Ironically I would probably have a better chance of getting one now as I make pretty routine deliveries of pescription drugs that can be quit pricey, as opposed to my desired job of working with computers.

Maybe I am better off waiting until I get a bit more settled and have a place of my own. Hopefully I would be able to move out of the city limits making it easier to get a permit. At this point though all I am really looking for is something to allow me to do some target shooting.

Erik get your Long gun permit and buy a Ruger 10/22 with a bunch of extra Mag.'s and a 1,ooo round's of ammo to learn the Basic's . Find a good Range and learn form the Guy's and Girl's {some of my best shooter's are women,They pay attention!!}
