Hi, guys!

Got a question regarding barrel length, specifically for a CMMG 45 ACP Guard, their new(ish) PCC.

My question is, if my research is correct, the optimal barrel length for the 45 ACP is around 11-ish inches, for complete powder burn and best velocity. I'd like to get a Guard carbine to play with and put through its paces; but I want the stocked version, which would have to be a 16-inch barrel.

My question is, do you lose anything with that long of a barrel with the 45 ACP round? Or is the addition length effect negligible?

I don't want to screw with doing an SBR just yet. I would consider doing the pistol with brace, perhaps; but I'd prefer the actual carbine so I can see if I really like the model first.

I only have 5 inch and shorter 45's....this would be my first 45 PCC. I don't have any experience with the round in longer barrels; but I've read quite a bit, and I just wanted to check with some of you folks who have had real hands on experience.

Is 11" barrel about as far as you'd want to go with the 45 ACP?

Thanks so much!

First, BlackKnight86's response to Smitty44 is priceless.

Second Michaelm466 has a great resource. I use Ballistics By The Inch all the time as a reference point. At 16" you won't have reached that point of diminishing returns yet. It with have a very mild report with very little flash signature as well. If you don't mind the length, a 16" 45ACP carbine is a pleasure to shoot.

Thanks so much, guys! I think I'm going to get one....this will be my first PCC and my first CMMG.....it'll be fun to put it through its paces!

Did you check out lead star?
I had not heard of them until your mention. I'm going to do more reading at home.

They are affiliated with Palmetto State Armory, right? Are they going to do a .45 ACP, or just the 9mm?

Do you have one? What do you think of them? I've heard pretty good things about PSA.

Supposed to be real nice. A guy that's painting my scooter is a world champ rimfire shooter and he showed me his. Loves it. Shoots a downloaded nine out of it.

I don't know about barrel length, but the guy next to me at the range last Saturday had a new Guard with a pistol brace and let me fire it and it was super fun BUT it was very erratic, many FT feed, and he's sending it back to the factory for evaluation . . .
