Disclaimer! I know next to nothing about guns!

Question: A family member owes a debt to me and he offered to repay the debt by giving me one of his guns. I took down the Model and Serial number of the gun he offered:

Highpoint Model C 9mm Pistol/Auto.

Does anyone know where I would go to find out more info on it? How much is it worth? I think it's been fired once or twice other than that it looks to be in good condition....

Any help is much Thanked!

Brian

Uhmmm...that gun he's offering aint exactly state of the art, and it's far from being the greatest thing to roll off the assembly line. If it's in PERFECT condition, I'd say it MIGHT be worth $75 pre-owned. They're about $100-$125 new, if my feeble memory serves correctly. I personally wouldn't use one as anything more than an anchor for my canoe.

As a sidenote though, people say it's pretty reliable inspite of it's clunky, crude nature. I also know of alot of people that think pretty highly of thier carbines that are based off the same action.

you might try gunsamerica.com, I've always had pretty good luck finding that kinda info there.

Cripe..hopefully I'm done editing....Remember Mikey..think first...THEN type!:footinmou

And don't depend on this pistol if your life is on the line.

Would it be accurate enough for a range-only practice gun?
Just how much $$ does this guy owe you?

Speaking of Saturday Night Specials...

There are three reasons to take property in exchange for debt:

1) It's a good deal on something you want. But, since you say you've no interest in guns, I'll assume that it's not something you want.

2) You can sell the property for more than the debt. Before taking the gun in payment, call your local gun shop and find out how much they'll give you for it. Don't forget to discount that price for the time and effort you'll have to put into selling it. AND make sure that he owns the gun legally and that you make the transfer 100% legally or not only will you be unable to sell the gun, but could end up in legal trouble for trying to.

3) There's no hope of ever collecting the debt in cash, the property is all you're ever gonna get. You may be better off writting the bad debt off on your taxes (yes, you can write bad debt off on your taxes, consult your tax professional for specific advice about your exact situation).

If you do decide to take the gun, be very sure that you cover yourself legally. Gun posession and/or ownership can have serious legal implications.

Thanks all. He owes me $150. And after the reply's I think I'll take the cash! (I was leening in that direction anyway.)

Much thanks!

And remember...friends don't let friends own Hi-Points....:D

Actually I got ta' thinkin' 'bout an incident up here in Alaska involving one of those things...

One of the local gunshops got hold of one, and took the sights off of it...then remounted a set of sights on the right side of the slide. Called it the "Ghetto Special" or something like that. It made its rounds at the gun shows, and just about everybody who saw it got a good chuckle out of it.

Then one day...it disappeared...Turns out they'd had it in the display case of the store when some young wanna be gang banga saw it and went nuts.."Dat's my gun! Oohh!! Mighty My My! I Gots ta have it! it got dem sights what's mounted fo the ghetto stance!"

So he asks the guy behind the counter how much he wanted for it...guy behind the counter stated that they'd uhmmmm...never considered selling it...

Mista' Gangsta just got his PFD amd simply had ta' have it...

I forget the exact price paid, but as I recall it was approximately $1,000....:D

OMG! That's f-ing wonderful- I can't stop laughing. :D

I just saw one of these in a gunstore. Even out here in high-priced CA they had one for $139.98 brand-new

Besides being downright ugly, I personally wouldn't fire one for fear it would blow up in my face...

Cash is king, tell him to pay up!

Highpoint Model C 9mm Pistol/Auto...I honestly wouldn't give $5 for one of those "pistols".:barf:.:barf:...In-fact, I'm not even sure that I'd TAKE $5 to own one.:barf:.

Moving to Gadgets & Gear ... (the question has already been answered, but the guys there will get a kick out of Scissors' story anyway)

I have all of you beat.

I used to shoot with a buddy when I worked for Veterans Affairs here in Madison, Wisconsin. He liked obscure weapons, and he showed me a revolver had I had never seen before, and with good reason!

It was a 22LR revolver called 'The Clerk.' It was a zinc framed, heavily nickeled revolver with NO locking lug for the cylinder. When you cocked the hammer, the 'hand' rotated the cylinder, but no frame lock engaged the cylinder to hold it into place during ignition.

Top price. Fifteen bucks. That's right, 15 bucks.
