One thing that one of the jungle writers (Ron Hood?) mentioned in reviewing the Spyderco Military was: even in an abusive environment where a lot of junk might collect around the liner, the blade was still easy to open and the lock kept working. This is not to be taken for granted!

For a folder that might be taken into such an environment -- never know what might hit you -- what folders would you guys trust from this point of view (i.e. not getting sticky in opening or failing to lock?)

BM Axis (710, 720 or 730 -- I like these but am especially worried about them because they seem to have some space behind the button! Maybe I could add some kind of cover, but I don't know if I would rely on it totally)

Why not a small fixed blade? Good question.
I am thinking of circumstances where I might not want it to be that obvious that I was carrying a knife at all (e.g. visiting areas near highly dubious military activity--not U.S.) Maybe it's easier to conceal a small fixed blade than I realize--but I still have the feeling I'd be better off with a folder.
The point would be to NOT look like a soldier.

Clearly the Sebenza would be a good answer, but for the $200+ difference between that and any of the other likely candidates, I could pick up quite a few other things that are probably more useful for the money. (Like $200 cash on my person, for example...:^)

Hi Johnniet.

Try with Spyderco Wegner. I am very satisfied with it. It is strong, not so big, thin and ergonomic liner-locker. I am carrying it everywhere even in our army barracs and so on ...

There are some really cool neck knives and boot knives that might work for you. I don't know the best brands for these, but you might be able cajole a suggestion or two from some of the other forumites.

If at first you don't succeed, go buy a knife.

As to your comments about the AXIS lock having a problem with debris, I have tried to make it stop functioning and the thing just kicks my tail every time. I threw it in the sand at the beach, no effect. I buried it in the sand, dug it up and it still opened and locked up perfectly. Ah-ha I thought, bury it open and dig it out (carefully) and try to close it, worked perfectly.
"FINE" said I, I took it out at home while I was doing a small construction job, thought this would do it, dropped it into a wheelbarrow of wet concrete mix, dug it out and ....STILL opened and closed perfectly! I conceeded with AXIS lock having kicked my butt. It effectivly wipes it's mechanism clean with use.

Has anyone else seen a situation where the thing fails to work? I would love to hear about it.

Regards: Edgeman
