Gunny with and without ramp

I'm considering getting a Gunny in the Spring (new batch). My question is this - a lot of you guys have posted saying you like the Gunnys rampless, even though you may like the Bravo-1 with the ramp.

I have 2 Bravo-1's with the ramps and I like them. Is there anybody out there that likes the ramp on your Gunny? I'm asking this because I'm having a hard time making up my mind. (And the vodka's not helping :( )

Doc

I liked the ramp on my Gunny! If you like your Bravo ramp, I say go with the ramp. If you dont like it you can always have it removed later, or remove it yourself. But if you dont try it, then youll never know, and always wonder.......

agreed with what J said.

also, maybe you should move over to whiskey if the vodka's not helping :D

Doc, you know I have a couple of Bravos with ramps. I naturally ordered my Gunny with ramp but found it to be uncomfortable, after several weeks of vacillation, off it came. I'd say try the ramp. It can always be removed.
Gunny sans ramp

Loved mine without the ramp. It was nimble and capable in nearly all situations.

I would have hated the ramp as I never use the thumb in that manner to cut.

I have both the Bravo-1 with ramp and Gunny with ramp.

I like the Bravo-1 with the ramp, but DON'T like the Gunny's ramp. It seems to protrude out a little more and bother me.

Why wait until spring for your new Gunny? Bark River is releasing new ones before Christmas.

I've handles a rampless Gunny and I have a Rampful Gunny. I found no difference for me on the grips I use so I went with aesthetics for my choice. A Gunny without a ramp is like Sofia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Lauren Hutton, Claudia Schiffer without a gap in their smile. :D

I'm a fan of the ramp, maybe its my cutting style but I like it. Though not mine I do have a gunny in front of me and personally I think it looks better with the ramp than without.

Agreed. The ramp makes the Bravo series, IMO. Without it, all you have is just another "bushcrafter". I like the ramps on my Bravo 1 & 2. Don't have a Gunny yet, but when I get one, it will be ramp time, all the way. There's no ramp on the new necker, but there's not much room for one- there's plenty of jimping instead.

I can't wait for that little thing to show up. I'm starting to get the shakes. :D

I like it better without.

I seem to put my thumb on the spine quite a bit and it naturally lands right at the point of the ramp.

I would go rampless, but as others have pointed out you’ll never know if it works for you unless you try it.

I think it's OK but due to the shorter handle and smaller size the ramp should really be way farther up on the blade than it is.

I got mine without the Ramp. However, I didn't like the ramp on my first Bravo-1 and didn't think it'd work for me on the Gunny either, even though it's smaller knife. My thumb always seems to land right where the ramp is on the spine of the Bravo-1, and the notched area that is supposedly geared for firesteel striking is awkward. I thought the feel would be similar on the Gunny if they left the ramp in the same place relative to the rest of the knife.

BUT, as others have pointed out, if you're unsure Doc, you might find it worth it to get it with the ramp and mod it later if you don't like it. I just went rampless from the beginning because to me, having the ramp there was more likely to add an unnecessary annoyance that I'd have to take the extra time and effort to correct on my own later. More likely to add an extra feature without much gain in function for my knife use.

Good luck with your decision!

And FWIW, I like the aesthetic of the Bravo-1 with the ramp just as much as without, but I like the look of the Gunny better without the ramp. The ramped Bravo makes me think of a shark...:D

I like the look of the ramp on my bravo 1. I also like using it. I put my thumb overtop of the ramp and find it very comfortable. It adds character to the knife imo

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Doc (still sitting on the fence :( ) (not that I need another knife).

One other thing to thing about is sheathing. If you like the Bark River bushcraft sheaths, the rampless Gunny works much better in one than it does with a ramp.
