Gunting Lock backwards?

I did a search on this, as i figured someone must have asked this... but i found nothing. So i ask at the risk of sounding stupid. Why is the compression lock on the Gunting backwards than the other compression locks? Does it have something to do with the way its used? Its much harder to close it this way....

It's actually quicker and easier to close with this set up without having to change grip position.

just thumb it over, like a liner on the top, instead of using the index to pull it over(like the alum salsa)... lot quicker.

still waiting for spyderco to make me a left handed linerlock in the regular production.

I find it harder to close.. my thumb has more strength pushing the regular compression lock than it does "pulling" the one on the Gunting... i find that my thumb doesn't have the strength and feels like its gonna cramp up. Maybe my Gunting is just tighter? I mean when you close a regular liner lock your thumb "pushes" the liner out of the way.. just like with the regular compression lock.. with the gunting you have to "pull".. which is opposite of a right-handed liner lock... I don't carry my salsa much so im not sure, but i have my lil temp here and its much easier to close than the gunting.

I'm sorry that you find it harder..its actually more ergonomic than the other direction..I assume you roll the knife to make it like you do with a liner lock...

Just like a finger along side the trigger rather than through it..since it takes so little effort to find the trigger..The thumb rests along side the release in its normal postion till needed..

The advice given by VampyreWolf is correct..just a slight push with your thumb in the same way one makes a natural fist..like a child does..
Slide it over to the right..don't take your hand off of a user position.,and release the lock..close the blade..it closes into your line of vision..

As for backwards? the Gunting came out first..
the OTHERS are backwards..ROFL....
Spyderco decided that they are to let one do a liner lock motion,,push with the thumb..a learned response..and necesitates rolling the knife out of a user position into an out of line of vision closing..a reason I don't like lock backs and the accepted one handed closing....The otherway to do one of these other compression locks is to dangle the knife in your finger tips..compress the lock release with your first finger pushing to the thumb.. and close the knife

again its a pretty flimsy way to hold a knife..
BUT if its not an MBC knife-tool, a non SDR tool..
its OK I guess..not my cup of tea..

but the Gunting is a full force continuum tool..it flows throught the full continuum without releaing ones user grip..something thats important in a MBC- SDR tool to be used in its envisioned way..

I ran this by tool users,,Chiropracters,,physical therapists, Orthopeidic surgeons( specializing n hands), firearms instructors and martial artists I knew when I first did the prototypes..
how? There is one Gunting made with the other style compression lock..all said it was backwards..un-ergonomic and several put it into their left hands and said it was a left handed tool..
So I stuck by my decision..

again..I'm sorry that you have problems with it...I and all the people I train have problems with the backwards version..

be safe

The Gunting is a fascinating knife. I can't think of any better (and I'm the perfectionist type). :D

I traded my Gunting because I couldn't afford to keep it. But I will say that it's a freaking awesome knife. The Grinds, the shape, the MBC-rated lock, the utility it can be put to, the way it flicks open or via kinetic opening (cut my leg once too hehe), the CPM440V (S60V) was awesome too notwithstanding its detractors.

The only thing I didn't like about the Gunting was the length of the handle n weight. I'm 5'6", medium sized hands and the handles were too long for me. If they were 2/3" shorter, they would've been perfect.

Handle too big? I wish there was a 20% bigger one-I have big hands. The lock works just as it should-I never thought of it as less than intuitive, but it is my first compression lock. The Gunting is a prime example of form following function-something that many knifemakers seem to ignore. The tool is designed to do a job; the job's existance precedes the tools. I don't think that de-escalation would work if the lock went the other way...The new batch are coming...:D --Joe

Great knife (oh no, it´s him again...)

Yep,

Great knife, BUT (here it comes again) why can´t we have one with a longer blade (same handle)... :p I know that I´m always whining about this. Yes, yes, I´ll get some custom maker make one for me sometime when I got the time and cash to do it.

I carry mine every, EVERY, day. Great knife. Like the Perrin FB and the Temperance.

Thanks for making it happen Bram and Sal.

The blade is 3" long in order to comply with legal limitations. Helas! now it's already too long :( Fortunately, the TUSOK will save the day... eventually.

Actually, the Gunting seems correct to me. I think Bram got it correct on the Gunting. Spyderco got it wrong on all the other compression lock knives. The backwards opening compression lock (on non-Gunting Spydercos) and the clips (of late) equal major Spyder disappointment. :(

Has BRAM said that Tusok is still in development? I thought it was dead in the water. :(

Thanks for the support and kind words..
The Gunting program will continue to grow...

For those of you willing to pay for it..I'm having some custom Guntings done..the blades a bit longer...by at least 1/2 inch..
and I'm extending the handle a bit..
they are not inexpensive...sorry..

There are custom Rescue Guntings..in safety Orange with my usual custom designed blunt tip...the better to use the rescue safely in real time..they can be gotten from Martin in Germany...$400USD
check them out @ www.gunting-museum.com

I have a custom done by one of my students..he called it a Military version.. Blued 4" double edged blade...army green handles,, black oxide liners...still talking to the Hard use guys on a custom run of tank cutting Guntings...

My personal custom Odin Damascus blade & bolster, mammoth ivory handled..titanium liner Gunting comes next week..of course with cool file work...might convince maker to do a few more..
VERY VERY expensive...figure around $2K

Those of you wanting Tusok or a mini Gunting..I'm working on a custom run of both....I await the protos to see if they FEEL correct..

Spyderco may have passed on my TUSOK..and my other knives but they'll live on somewhere..
such is life...
Of course they DO have the new engineered Guntings alledgedly coming to me soon...I can';t wait..Haven't seen the reengineered pilot Drone yet...

Very interesting. I might be interested in a custom version like this. Please post a pic when it´s done.

The knife already exists.....I didn't snap a pic however.

:) I would like to see a larger Gunting as well as the Tusok come to fruition, but preferably on a production or "mid-tech" basis, to keep the cost reasonable. Bram, one time you mentioned, I believe, a possible collaboration with with Strider. Now, THAT would rock!

That Millie Gunting Rules..I can't say how cool that thing is..--joe
