Gunting options

Hi guys,

I'm new here and this is my first post - so please be gentle. I'm an avid knife collector, but passed my collection onto my brother a few years back. My only Spyderco now is a Spydercard CE that I bought 2 years ago - an awesomely useful little knife and always on me (as long as I carry my wallet). I then also have a Buck Metro on my keys for odds and ends. I'm more keen on the practical side now and want to get into using knives for SD - probably more out of interest than neccessity. I'm from New Zealand, so not much going here in terms of knife SD classes, so thought I'd get a Gunting and the videos and see how far I get....

I'm in a predicament though: I'd really like to get a plain edge Gunting (easier to keep nice and sharp), but I'd prefer the S30V blade. As far as I know, Spyderco doesn't make the PE in S30V - so I have to compromise: Do I get a PE in 440 or do I go for the 50/50 CE in S30V? Maybe you guys can help me on the right track....

Thanks and regards,

Greg

If you are going to use your Gunting purely for SD, and leave the utility stuff to some other blade, it doesn't much matter which blade steel you get, or whether it is serrated or plain (yes, many will argue in favor of SE or PE, but I don't think it's critical). That's what I would recommend. I carry a Gunting daily and it's never cut a thing. You should also get a trainer to practice with since you don't want to drop your knife and either break off the tip or stab yourself in the foot.

If you absolutely must have a PE in S30V, I believe I read that a limited number of PE S30V knives were made. If true, they are probably not available through "normal" channels, but may be available on the secondary market. Can anyone verify this rumor?

Thanks for the help. I've looked around everywhere, but no sign of any S30V PEs. I've decided to 'settle' for the S30V combo edge.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to ask this question, but is it possible to buy the Gunting, the Trainer and the 3 video set as a package for a good rate anywhere? I've just seen them advertised separately?

Feel free to email me details directly rather than post on the forum.

I really wish they had made the newer Guntings in plain edge. I would like to have one in S30V, but do not like serrated edge. I guess I wont be buying one. :(

Ok, kids..

There were a small number of PE S30v Guntings made. They were all shipped out from spyderco to fill back orders, so if you really need one, you're going to have to look. Also, Sal has said that there may be new ones made soon, so you can ask him. The CSSD/SC website has the vids and knives available for shipping. Just click the WWW tag at the bottom of my window.

The Serrated edge isn't like the serrations on say, the endura, because the Gunting has a pretty high thin hollow grind. Some where I reviewed the new one, and it's killer. They are even better than they used to be.

Welcome to the cult..--Joe

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'll move this thread to the Spyderco forum for you. Those guys can answer your questions -- straight from the spyder's mouth.

Sia: as usual stunning photos...soon I'll be there and you can take stunning photos of me...with the Guntings....ROFL...you have to make me look young and thin.....:)
Samo: hope you are doing OK..

The Gunting is here to stay..its working...its doing its job in the world...its saving lives..
I'd like different flavors of blades but I'm VERY VERY happy to have Spyderco make me such a quality edged tool..and because of that I'll happily take one flavor of blade...
I personally like 50-50 ( 60-40 whatever...) I get two cutting edges in one tool...

be safe

This is a real "newbie" question, I know. Is the top edge of the Gunting sharpened? Looks so in the photos. Been thinking of investing in a Gunting, trainer, and vids since I downloaded some very nice wallpaper from Prague ;o)
