Gunting Problem!

Ive only had my Gunting a few days now and I have had it open in my pocket numerous times now, Ive been cut twice and may pockets even more.. I cant even think of getting something out of my pocket and just pulling my hand out, Its very hard to get my hand out without part of my hand coming into contact with the ramp and opening the blade.

I am carrying my Gunting in my front right pocket...I may try the rear pocket and see if that works for me. I really like this knife, but it may be going back for a Chinook...

I'd be willing to bet anyone that they couldnt carry this for a week without it opening in their pocket...What am I doing wrong? My Gunting had a positive "click" when shut...It just that the ramp gets caught on everything. I cant be the only one with this problem, other than carring it on one of those Kydex holsters, what are my options?

Kindest Regards,

Solutions:

1. Tighten down the pivot screw. Bram recommends that it be fairly tight, and I've found this works best too.

2. Keep nothing else in that pocket so you don't need to reach in. I wear my keys on a carabiner on my left side, keep my wallet in my lift side front pocket, and generally keep whatever fixed blade(s) or folder(s) I am wearing on my belt on the right and in my right front pocket.

3. Buy one of Skunkwork's excellent holsters. More secure, safer, and better presentation of the Gunting in a "tactical environment."

I would really recommend against carrying a knife that tends to open on its own in your hip pocket. You could get quite a stab wound if it came open and you sat on it.
I usually carry mine in a Skunkworks holster, though I do occasionally carry it in my front pocket, with the pivot tightened down, and nothing else in the pocket.
That said, I really like and appreciate the Gunting's design, but I've always viewed it like a dog trained for attack. Treated carefully, it will make an excellent, reliable, trustworthy companion. But if you disrespect it (not saying you have), or forget that it is really designed around certain specialized purposes and compromises have been made to accentuate those abilities, you can get hurt. Is that a stupid simile?

Burke is 101% correct.
Get the holster from skunkworks you will not regret it.
It really the best way for that unit.

I'm sorry that your knife opens in your pocket..
it shouldn't...
and I know that doesn't fix your pants or your nicks..
PLEASE accept my apologies..

Obviously pressure on the ramp can make it open..
pushing it into one's pocket to get it deep etc can exascerbate the situation..
and I'm not saying that you do that..
It might be catching on your pocket going in..???
All that aside..
I'd tighten the pivot screw tighter..
I know alot of people then say it doesn't open easily..
OK..IF you can open by thumb..then its OK.. and I don't mean greased lightening opening by thumb either..
its too tight? its right..
it should ramp openn as if a straight razor..
it should not inertia open..
it should kinetic open if needed..thats a very forceful rapid opening ..."BAM"..

If you're not sure, please send it back to SPYDERCO attention MIke in Warenty..have him tighten & Lock tite the pivot screw in to its proper position...very tight!

I'm very sorry..its not right..

WE'll get it right..
we hopefully are getting less of this happening and less pivots coming loose..

I wear jeans..I wear shorts..I wear kydex holsters.. I wear dockers...

Please keep me informed...

Keith, I was carrying my Gunting as an EDC utility knife until 9/11 when things in my federal office building got real hairy where knives are concerned (I carry a Meerkat at the moment), and I noticed that the pivot on my Gunting became looser and looser, opening in my pocket with some frequency. Thank you Bram for it being tip-down! In any case, I now make it a point to check the pivot screw tightness on all of my knives on a regular basis, sort of preventive maintenance, and I keep the screw on the Gunting especially snug, just as Bram recommends. I have not had a problem since, and I still carry the knife a lot when I am not going to a federal building, it and my StarMate are my favorites.

First let me say that Ive been carrying my Gunting every since I posted and things have gotten better. I believe to carry this knife one need's to understand how and why the Gunting is designed the way it is and realize that is not your everyday do everything knife.

My pivot screw itself has not loosened up at all; the resistance on the blade opening or closing is the same (semi-snug).

My problem was getting use to the ramp sticking out of my pocket. My wrist or whatever would catch on it and partially open the blade...I think I would have to tighten it down WAAAYYYYY too much to stop that from happening, I believe my pivot is set where it needs to be.

The more Ive carried my Gunting; It has grown on me more everyday...I’m keeping mine anyway! I believe the Gunting is a tool, which just takes time to fully appreciate and to carry.

I just wanted to be sure to reply back so there was no misunderstanding, I’m sure Bram, that your very interested in every comment or opinion made here.

Kindest Regards,

Thanks!!
the input is appreciated...muchly..
I'm on my way to Paris in a day so I won't be able to comment for awhile..OK, 2 weeks..I'm not ignoring anyone..

The Gunting is a new animal..never existed before..
so I appreciate ANY and all comments..
some I'll be able to incorporate and use in the newest design of a Kinetic knife..the baby Gunting: "TUSOK"...
in honor of Remy Presas teaching me the TUSOK.."pass n poke"
small..light n fast...

some I'll always be stuck with... comments and ideas that is
till I figure out a way out of this box into the next one..

thanks again

well, my gunting was coming loose at the pivot pin - considered loctite, etc but decided to send it to spydie, and got it back yesterday - i dont know what they did, but it doesnt loosen up like before - it would loosen after being tightened and opened 6-8 times noticebly, not anymore - if it continues to give ya probs, send it in - took about a month in all............

Mike Sastre of River City Sheaths made me a pocket sheath for my Gunting that really works well.It will work for right hand or left handed persons. All the corners are rounded and is very confortable in the pocket or when you draw the knife. The knife comes out of your pocket in the proper grip and is as fast as a pocket clip. This sheath turned out so well that Mike said he would make them for anyone else that wants one.Contact him at River City Sheaths.I am a long time friend of Mikes and live only about a mile away so I have seen his shop and all of the many types of sheaths he makes. Many on this list agree that his sheaths have no equal.

I am probably a wimp for feeling this way, but does anyone else dislike carrying their Gunting exposed to the public? I always make sure that I have on an extra long shirt, or I carry mine in a cargo pocket with the flap over the exposed upper third. I am seriously kicking around the thought of a kydex rig, much like the one mentioned above by toro. Just curious, I know I have freaked out more than one passer by with the huge, shiny ramp exposed over the lip of my jeans pocket! :D

Sifu,

Thanks for the advice. I haven't had any problems with the live blade, but I've been using the drone a lot and the male portion of the pivot pin assembly backed completely out. Luckily, I found it in the bottom of my gear bag. I was also thinking of a little loc-tite, but may send it in instead.

dances, sounds like what mine was doing - i would send it in, i dont know what they did but i dont think they loc tited it, cuz ya can still tighten/loosen it, so yes, i would send it in.....
