Gunting Question.

I've had the gunting a few weeks now and have really grown to like this knife alot. I carry it in my waistban and carry my Temperance in my RFP.

I am about to order the drone/trainer and my question is can the handles be switched out? I was thinking how cool the "live" blade of the gunting would look on that red G-10.

The scales could be changed; however, since Spyderco in heavily involved in MBC (Martial Blade Craft) it (Spyderco) has reserved red scales for trainers/drones and black or blue scales for tools. One would not want to get in the habit of not realizing red scales = training device. A friend could pick up your red scaled live blade and think cool I have seen the Gunting Drone but only in pictures and next thing you know stitches. I pick up my drone (red) and instictively know I can practice with it were as the tool (black) I instictively know it is not for practice. Do as you will with switching the scales ; however, you are someone could get cut.

Cool, I thought it would work. I don't let my friends touch my knives anyway. When I'm not wearing them, they're in my safe.

Thanks for the info.

I know that you bought the knives...therefore you can do as you please..
But the other poster,wpc37203 was correct..You might know whats up..but anyone else might not..
"Murphy" will determine if ONLY you touch your knives or if you mis-remember...
or if someone else actually gets their hands on them..
I've seen many strange things happen....none of them planned nor anticipated..
I wish you the best..
They are color coded for safety...again you own them,,you do as you see fit,,
I advise against it...
training units stay trainers..working tools as such and live implements as deadly tools..
Having a Red or Blue Glock would be "cool" also..
but it might with "Murphy" around cause problems..
what type? when? I don't know..only "Murphy" does..that's why they are called accidents..
I gather you have no children either...
Mine was all taught firearm safety and colorcoding..

again all in the case of "Murphy" coming to visit..

be safe...
no offense meant..

I am curious about one thing. You carry your Gunting IWB. I assume this is for concealment. Seems to me that carrying the red handles would be much more attention grabbing than you would want. If it were me and I wanted something really cool looking I would get another color of scales made the way I wanted them and put on my live blade. That way you have "the look" without the risk of accidents. If that is too much it would seem like it is probably not that important in the first place and the value I would get from haveing the live blade with red slabs would not outweigh the cost of the risks involved. Its all a matter of economics, IMHO.

Thanks for the comments guys. I carry my Gunting in my waist of my pants with my shirt untucked. Every person I know here doesn't even know that much about knives. These are guys that go eeek! when I tell them I spent $100 on a knife when they have a $5 knive in their pocket.

They don't even know what a red handle knife would mean. I just want to do it for my own taste and a bit of a change. Many makers offer their knives with red G-10 like Greg lightfoot etc. so this isn't a safety issue for me as far as color coding goes.

I've had many Spyderco's and back when I first saw the Gunting, I didn't like it, but of course I didn't understand it at the time either. The knife has really grown on me and it's the only knife I feel safe with without having to open up the blade to defend myself in a life/death encounter which I hope never has to happen. Very nice indeed.

If you are not going to open it in a SD situation why not just carry the drone? It will do all the closed techniques same as the live blade. It will save the hassle of switching the scales as well.

On a similar note, I carry my Gunting in a red Skunkworks sheath. I know the red kydex rig was for the drone, but the red and black colorations make it appear as though it were a tactical ladybug riding on my belt!

I'm with you Dman, I like variation too.

You guys are to much...ROFL..
I think any custom maker could get you G10 in just about any color..just make sure its the same thickness..
it comes in many colors....

Tactical lady bug.......:)
Thanks for all the nice comments about the Gunting..I'm happy that you're trying it out..
