Gunting/Strider?

I was taking a peek at the Spyderco forum and noticed a reference to an upcoming "Strider/Gunting" custom knife coming out on one of the threads. The Spyderco Gunting is a pretty cool looking knife (unusual humped blade design).

1) When will the "Strider/Gunting" be out?
2) What's the purpose of the unusual design of the blade? Special uses?

Mick, I noticed you popped in on a thread in the Spyderco forum discussing training with a Gunting with BAM. Any info on a Strider/Gunting?

Thanks,
David

We plan on making one.
It will be based on our EB line.

Not sure when it will be ready, we have a couple things in front of it.

DT,

I can offer a bit of info on what guntings are for. Gunting is really the name for a scissor-like motion, a move done a lot in filipino martial arts. One empty hand example of a gunting is if someone tries to punch your face with a right cross, you can hit their fist with your left hand moving from left to right (like playing knuckles, really smack the bones) and with your right hand you can rap their bicep or strike the bicep with a hand chop, goinf from right to left (see the scissor motion?) the idea with guntings as I understand them is that if you are going to block, why not cause pain while doing it? Most filipino moves that have been taught to me are like that. They do lots of "destructions", liek elbowing incomming punches and such. Always cause pain is the motto, and these moves seem quite efficient too.

So, with the gunting you have that long bit of metal on the back of the blade. You can do a gunting motion, hidding a bad guy's hand with your left hand while rapping their picep with that long metal bit on the back of th eknife. This will cause a nice and painful gunting, as you are striking the bicep with a pointy metal bit! OUCH! And a "bi-product" of the gunting motion is that your folding knife now opens up.

You can imagine then someone with their own weapon thrusting in at you. You can gunting, causing that momentary pain pause, and now your folder is open, and you can start your stabbing! it is nice too if you can catch the incomming thrust with your left hand and gunting, as then you can keep the armpit exposed for a good thrust. That is a nasty area to get hit with anything.

I hope this helps!

Is this going to be a folder, or a fixed blade? I seem to remember seeing a fixed blade somewhere with the gunting shape to the handle. I know the Syderco model is a folder.

BRAM (Mr. Gunting) has had a few custom made Gunting fixed blades made in the last few months, if you look you can probably find the pictures of the ones that Rob Simonich made .

Well, mick said it was based off the EB line, so I'm assuming this is a fixed?

Does that destroy the point of having that "metal punchy" thing? I mean, why hit them with that, if you have the blade or butt end right there...

Crayola,

Thanks for the detailed info. Now I understand the thought behind the blade design.

Mick, can you clarify whether the Strider Gunting will be a folder or a fixed blade? Looks like folks commenting on this thread indicate fixed and folder.

I, too, don't understand what the advantage of the unusual humped blade design would be in a fixed blade knife; other than looking mighty cool.
