Gunting w. Clip on Left Side?

Hi all,

I've been interested in learning/using the Gunting, but as a left-hander, I'm wondering if the knife may be modified to allow for the clip to be mounted on the left side instead of the right. Righties may desire this for weak hand options.

I don't know how easy the compression lock may be manipulated by a leftie, either.

Other than going for a left-handed kydex belt or kneck sheath, is there anyone that can modify the knife for the clip to be attached on the left side? Can Spyderco do this? It would be great if this became a standard feature on future versions of the Gunting (and other knives...)

Since I do not trust the pocket clip to retain a knife, the clip position is not a major issue for me. I normally use a sheath, and there are several makers who can provide a left-handed sheath for the Gunting. I find the compression lock on the Gunting EASIER to use left-handed than with the right, and others have made the same comment. Go to www.gunting-museum.com for photos of Skunkworks sheaths and a link to the website. Other sources for Gunting sheaths are www.survivalsheath.com and www.rivercitysheaths.com . I also sometimes use a leather magazine carrier for a Colt 1911 pistol magazine, which works well as a friction fit with the Gunting's clip inside the sheath with the rest of the knife. BTW, I am somewhat ambidextrous, and prefer the reverse grip with the left hand and forward grip with the right. I usually carry my Gunting on the right side, so as not to confuse it with a pistol magazine in the stress of a gunfight. (I normally shoot pistols right-handed.) Another factor to consider is that using a knife in self-defense is very much a two-handed activity. If I remember correctly, at least one well-known Gunting user is a leftie, and prefers to hold the knife in the right hand and use the left hand as the "live" hand because it is stronger and more skillful. One major reason the Gunting is my EDC is because it works well for me in either hand, forward or reverse grip.

S,
Welcome to the G family! I also am a lefty but I've learned to work righty also with the G!I find the lefty holster is great, not necessary to move the clip!

I am left handed originally. many of the Gunting Gang is,,My instructor Prof Presas was as well..
The clip is not left right switchable.. its a dedicated right handed clip, and it recesses into the G10...if you managed to swithit,,the shape of the clip is wrong and you'd need a new indexing spot for your thumb cut as well..
Right handness carry is built in..as is the lock.. The lock to work as envisioned..ie one handed it needs the mirror image done..
If you try any other Spyderco compression lock its what I consider a left handed lock.. so try one of those in your left and and you'll see what I mean..
holding a SDR or MBC tool with ones finger tips to close it is down right dangerous..Plus if cannot change up within the flow of usage..
Can I use a Gunting as is in my left hand..yes..
not as well but it can...
But you cannot do idexing as well for ones finger is in the thumb spot while ones middle finger is in the thumb indexing..
Yes..a single left handed egineering model exists..it lives in Germany with Mr Lehmann...
Once in use its a left or right..
We need to sell more than thousands..we need to sell 10s of thousands of regular Guntings and have demand for leftys I bet before we get Spyderco to make us a dedicated lefty..otherwise its not worth the engineering or tooling.
be safe

Thanks for all of the input and replies! I appreciate the input. I see the value in using the G weak handed (rightie, for me) and lefty via a belt sheath!

I look forward to learning more on the use and application of this fascinating tool!

I'll keep my eyes peeled for local training, too (San Fran Bay Area)

SIG:
GM Michael DeAlba does knife and Gunting work in SF..
He's a good friend and peer of mine..He does Gunting a bit differently but we've shared methods..so it will be MBC with Modern Farang flavor..that's all..
Sifu Janet Gee as well in SF...

I do get out to SF @ times..

I'll be in Spokane July 26-27..SKUCONSOL@aol.com for details
Vancouver BC for my 50th July 19-20..www.warriornorth.com

I use the tool by the way in my weak side to make it strong..
plus most of those I deal with are right handed and I want to attack their flexors not extensors...open hand not close it..
finger off trigger not finger pull trigger..

be safe
