Hi folks. I'm new to all of this but I'm looking forward to learning alot. I used to live on a british army base in Brunei, of course, there was a large Gurkha contingent there. I was about 6 years old at the time but I remember being fascinated by their knives, which of course I later learnt were called Khukuris. I saw them use them all the time and I remember having a few goes myself!
I'm dying to get a 'proper' khuk again. Being based in the UK makes it a bit difficult though.
I am really looking for advice on a model to get and a place to get it!! I'm not going to go chopping jungle foliage back (again....) but I would like a nice knife - what do you think?

Look forward to your responses..

Ross

Welcome to the cantina, Bowser! You are definitely in the right spot.

If you liked the khuk that the gurkas had I understand you might like the BAS and I think Uncle Bill has those right now on the special weekend sale thread. If you go to Uncle Bill's post and then click on the links at the bottom of his thread you will see the shopping website and the FAQ page. There you can look at the differences to each of the styles.

So check out the 7/19-7/20 weekend deals and see what you think. But hurry;) the sale ends tomorrow.:D

Again welcome to the cantina.

Welcome to the nut house. I'm sure the others will tell you what to get.

Get that BAS deal now!!! Or get another military model like the WW2s that are also on sale, or an M43 which is not.

Welcome to the cantina, Bowser. You have come to the right place for khuks. Everytime I get one, it becomes my favorite until the next one arrives. You will not be satisfied with just one, trust me.

As for which one? Ahhh, there's the rub. I have both the WWII 18" and BAS. The BAS is very handy for the smaller jobs around the house and backyard, but I have to agree with the experts (Uncle Bill and others on the forum) that the WWII is probably the best combination of tool and weapon. I was amazed at its balance...absolutely wonderful! And, it's just elegant in my opinion. I prefer the wood handled models, but the BAS only comes in horn; still a beautiful blade.

What with the sale going on right now, I would get both if possible. Crazy am I? Watch...you'll get one and wish you had ordered the other while it was on sale.

Last, but not least, you will never do business with a nicer, more honest person than Bill Martino; bottom line.

Take care and let us know what you decide.

Welcome Bowser! Your gonna enjoy it here with the rest of us HIKV infested lunatics!:D

Welcome! You might want to consider the original 16.5" WW2 - some think it's the perfect khuk to grab when you don't know what you'll need to do with it. It's just got that feel that gives you confidence the two of you can do it, whatever "it" is.

The other is the 12" AK. It's the knife you can tote when you aren't carrying a khuk. The other alternative is a 12" Sirupati or Dhankuta. All of them have 4" handles and 8 inch blades. Yes, only on the HI forum do you hear folks talk about an 8" blade being cute.

An 18" Sirupati is growing in my favor, also. Light but substantial.

Rusty is a smart feller.

I like (equally) my 15 " AK, and my 12 " AK. But I carry the 12" more.

The good news? You can't make a bad decision.

Bowser, I have been working with the 16.5" WWII the last few days and it is proving to be one heck of a worker. A good sized blade and the shorter handle. I had a 8" Oak tree on the ground before noon today and after lunch I managed to get the whole thing limbed in just about two hours. I remember doing that job with a saw and it seemed to take forever.

I don't know just what you are going to use the knife for but, if you are going to carry it for a military weapon. I would suggest the 16.5" WWII or the BAS. Both are very fine knives.

Again welcome and hope you enjoy the forum as much as the rest of us do.:) :)

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, I've just emailed Bill about getting me a BAS khuk, I think I came along at the right time!! Just in time for the weekend sale....
I'm looking forward to hanging out here guys, looks like fun.
As for the Gurkha curry, i dont remember trying any and I'm sure I would remember it if I did! I was only young at the time but I do have fond memories of the place..

Regards

Ross
