Gurkha in the news

Now what does it take to get the Victoria Cross? I think this man deserved it! That is incredible!

Amazing heroic story. Sounds like a bit of luck helped him out, along with his training and will to live.

You have got to love those guy's

While I am just in awe of the bravery and ability of this soldier, I am also seriously lacking in goodwill towards the commanders of that unit from the top down. As an ex-Army officer (even one that was required to be a REMF due to her gender) what idiot left 1 man to guard a checkpoint in a combat zone? I would NEVER leave one of my soldiers alone in an enemy held environment regardless of the expectations of the post. It is well tested that a battle team of 3 is the minimum for a defensive style position. Sure you have sniper teams of 2 but they are not expected to defend a position they are suppose to fade away from an organized assault on their position. I am glad this guy got the award he earned but I am saddened he was put in a position where he earned it.

that could be a short definition for war and conflict in general : good men(and women) made to do dangerous things with very little support.

Shavru....my mind is on over load.......REMF spelled out is understood beyond a shadow of a doubt, but....... in reality....how do I say this......and I suppose you'll lock my heels.....wouldn't REFF be more apropos?

ROFL Bookie. Probably, probably. But I think the term is more or less used genericly and not literal. At least I HOPE it isn't

Shavru- fighting with a 240B tripod because he didn't have his khukuri...tell me his squad leader isn't going to have him going EVERYWHERE with that khukuri dummycorded to him, Gallantry Cross or no gallantry cross...

, if he is gonna go about fighting like he did, he might as well carry , 40mm grenades, 30 cal machine gun with 500 rounds, handgun, L85a2, and his Kuk. altho, killing 40 people has to wear on the mind something terrible, even if it was in combat. I dont envy people who have to live with having killed someone, from what i have observed from a friend perspective, it is a HUGE personal violation to have to do it. and causes many issue in normal life forever.
