PRESS RELEASES

Alcas marks 60th anniversary with a name change to CUTCO Corporation
Dec 19, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Olean, N.Y., Dec. 19, 2009 - As the new year begins, so begins a new chapter for Alcas Corporation in Olean as it celebrates its 60th anniversary. Company officials announced that on Jan. 1, 2009, Alcas Corporation will be renamed CUTCO Corporation, reflecting the brand that has been the driver of the company's business for six decades.

CUTCO Corporation will be the parent company of CUTCO Cutlery Corporation, Vector Marketing Corporation, KA-BAR Knives Inc. and Schilling Forge Inc.

"CUTCO is the name that has been with us since 1949," said CUTCO Corporation Chairman, President and CEO Jim Stitt. "By changing the corporate name to CUTCO Corporation we will leverage the brand equity that we have built over the last 60 years."

"Alcas will always be an important part of our history," he added. "If not for the ingenuity and leadership of our early company leaders, we wouldn't be where we are today."

CUTCO cutlery was introduced in 1949 as a new product for Wear-Ever Aluminum, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa). Alcoa formed a joint venture with Case Cutlery in Bradford, Pa., called Alcas Cutlery Corporation, which would manufacture the new cutlery line.

In 1972 Alcas Cutlery Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa. Ten years later, a group of company officers purchased Alcas Cutlery Corporation from Alcoa, taking the company private.

Shortly after the management buyout, Alcas Cutlery Corporation purchased Vector Marketing Corporation, which became the distributor of CUTCO products in North America.

In 1990, CUTCO Cutlery Corporation was created to be the manufacturing subsidiary alongside Vector Marketing Corporation, and the parent company's name was changed from Alcas Cutlery Corporation to Alcas Corporation.

CUTCO has been making its products at its East State Street location since the first CUTCO knife was produced in March of 1949. It's something that company leaders are very proud of.

"We're proud to say that we've been able to keep our knives made in America," Mr. Stitt said. "When so many other companies are outsourcing their manufacturing, we've dedicated ourselves to keeping our manufacturing here in Olean. In fact, we are the largest manufacturer of kitchen cutlery in the United States and Canada."

CUTCO Corporation and its subsidiaries employ more than 800 people at its factory and administrative offices in Olean. Its product line includes more than 100 kitchen cutlery products, as well as a variety of kitchen gadgets, utensils and flatware.

Hmmm... looks like Ka-Bar needs to update their website. Either answer will be fine then.

I was just kidding by the way. It is still the same company, just a different name. The home website is still www.alcas.com

Interesting explanation on question #2: http://www.tomarskabars.com/Story_Kabar.html

"How KA-BAR became KA-BAR

Soon after its introduction, the KA-BAR trademark became widely known and respected. There have been many versions of how the KA-BAR name was adopted, but all evidence points to a letter received from a fur trapper. This particular fur trapper's testimonial turned out to be one of the most significant ever received by the Company. He wrote, in very rough English, that his gun had jammed and that he had therefore relied on his knife to kill a wounded bear that was attacking him. In thanking the company for their quality product, the trapper described using his knife to "kill a bar." The way his writing was scrawled across the paper it looked like "ka bar." The company adapted his writing and adopted it as their trademark, KA-BAR."

Woah, glad either answer is good. I had cutco down too, then changed it to alcas. Same with the remora question about the stock number. Had bk13cp for like 45 min then changed it to kabk13cp. Fun contest regardless.got the heart rate up a bit cause there was chaos in the house while trying to get it done. Good shit

well, since nobody was right, guyon keeps the knife :)

According to Guyon's answers BK13CP is the correct answer. Where did KABK13CP come from?

ETA I originally had Cutco Corp.(wiki), but changed it to Alcas(kabar's website).

I checked a couple of vendors who sell them (BK13's) and there were a couple that had the the KABK13cp number on them so I changed at the last minute.

It did occur to me to edit the Wikipedia page with bogus information on Ka-Bar, but I did not stoop to such devilry.

I spent most of the time working on the Hungary question. I didn't notice it at first on the Ka-Bar website.

Now that would have been skullduggery, which was encouraged.

I googled hungary kabar and it took me right to the kabar website.

It didn't occur to me that all the answers were all on the ka bar page until it was over. Im a little slow like that.

How good a bunch do we have here? Oregon messaged me that my CUTCO answer for number 5 was wrong. Turns out it was right, but he did it honestly, and that is just a mighty stand up thing to do. (That was the only question I didn't look up the answer to, Moose had mentioned that it was the parent company at one point this weekend.) But after the message, I went and looked it up, and sure enough, on the Kabar website, it says Alcas. My hat off to you good sir.

Yeah, that Remora item # was a head scratcher, since there were listings for both on the web. I went with the one on the Kabar site, though, since the other one was really only present on a handful of distributors and I figured that the KA prefix was only for companies that offered other manufacturers products. It didn't make sense that Ka-Bar would add a KA, since all their stuff is KA, right? Almost flip-flopped on that one.

I didn't intend the item # to be hard. I'm going to ask the peanut gallery here though... should KABK13CP versus BK13CP matter that much?
I'm cool with letting the KA slide. Regardless, your odds of winning the contest are really good anyway. Less people entered answers than I expected.
My family is on the way home from Alabama. I'm going to let someone else draw, so it may be late tonight before there's a winner.

Yeah, if you Google that search string, it comes up at enough places that I'd deem it an "official" item number. I think I'll let that one slide too.
The point of the questions wasn't really to stump people, but more to get people to look at all the cool information that exists on the Ka-Bar website.
I told Moose he could hint that the Ka-Bar website might bear fruit, but he chose not to. I think he wanted a little more drama. :D

I had a blast looking up the info and reading the company info on Ka-Bar site. Great contest, I almost missed it, I didn't even have a chance to look at others answers. Thanks again!

I really want that knife, but am happy you made the decisions you did so we all have the chance!

It seems like dealers are adding the ka to distinguish brand, where ka-bar needs not designate. I agree with the ruling because the question wasn't intended to be hard, so there is no need to penalize for a discrepancy. I'm cool with a 1 in 9 chance.

I wanted to add: monkeying with Wikipedia would have been devilish and might have resulted in a bonus prize. :p :D
