Just got the standard Guyot 38oz bottle.

On the advice of a friend, found finishing residue inside the bottle, a black residue on the walls and interior of the bottle.

I used a piece of ScotchBrite inside the top and neck, but cannot reach down inside.

Has anyone else cleaned theirs to get rid of this residue before first use?

If so, did you just use a simple brush down into it? Any type of beverage safe cleaner besides dish soap?

Thanks.

no...i haven't used mine yet so thanx 4 posting this ...black residue??? that cant be good 4 us...going 2 check bottle now

sigg makes a stiff-bristled brush for their bottles. or you can do what I do, just swab around a chunk of a green scrubbie with the end of a wooded spoon. you shouldn't need to use anything but dish soap.

Yeah, I either use the brush from my sigg cleaning set or my camelbak cleaning set and regular dishsoap. As din does, a regular scrub pad wrapped around a spoon will do. Alternatively you could use raw rice; just dump a cup or two in and swirl it around with water, it does a good job too. If I'm lazy or not in a rush, I'll just put the bottle in the dishwasher.

Go to the grocery store and buy some generic unscented denture cleaning tablets. I bought something like 60 tablets for $4. Camelback wants something like $10 for 8 of them, IIRC.

Fill up your bottle with warm water and drop a tablet in, then screw on the cap. Let it sit for about an hour and things should be cleaned right up.

I use these for my Camelback bladders, Siggs, Nalgenes and other water carriers.

Just out of curiosity, have you not encountered some issues with closing the lid when using effervescent tablets?

i dont close the lid all the way, i just drop the acid, er....... tablets and set er in the sink to soak and bubble away. some spills out, not much.

After reading these and other suggestion on a couple other sites, I went with the alcohol approach.

Another forumite told me he'd used a rag w/alcohol on it to clean the black substance out of his Guyot.

I took a rag, and not wanting to use isopropyl, decided to go with an alcohol-based mouthwash.

The black came off on the first test swipe.

I then took a metal shishkabob skewer that had a loop at the end, and threaded 2 rolled paper towels thru it.

Poured 1/4 cup of mouthwash into the bottle, and scrubbed the inside.

Emptied, then washed with dishsoap, & rinsed.

Let dry overnight, then went back and did the wipe test w/rag & alcohol.

Clean.

Into the kits they'll go.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I let the tablets effervesce for a few minutes and just screw the lid down. Then I'll shake the bottle once every 10 minutes or so. When I take the lid off, there is a little pressure release but nothing worse than a 2 liter soda.
