when it rains it pours!
i was in town on tuesday and decided to stop and visit my favorite pawn shop.
the same one that i picked up the mann crusier and sager chemical axe at a couple weeks ago.
i went in on tues. and he had a BOX full of old hatchets. i go in there from time to time and their is usually nothing. he said that a few days ago an old fellow came in with the box. they are all in damn near perfect shape.
so...tuesday i bought a TRUE TEMPER TOMMY AXE-NEVER USED-STILL HAS THE PLASTIC EDGE GUARD ON IT, I ALSO GOT AN OLD COLLINS HATCHET stamped CE, and an OLD COUNCIL TOOL HATCHET, all with original handles. their were also a few others...
an SLEPLEIGH HARDWARE 'FOR SPORTSMANS' hatchet (w/the duck w/ original handle in almost perfect shape (w/sheath) he wants 35 bucks for it).
an old PLUMP carpenters hatchet for 15 bucks.
and... several other small hatchets that are all in damn near perfect shape. it's pretty amazing really.
one of the 'mini' hatchets was a UNION TOOL.
i am honestly a bit confused; chances are that i will never come across such a 'stash' again.
in order to get these i would have to sell some...though i do not want to...
question is; do you fellows that buy/sell on flea bay think that i could break even and aquire some of these w/out going broke or getting divorced? i have never sold or bought anything off flea bay, so i am looking for advice... it's just that this guy has so many nice ones.
i think that the old fellow either collected them or had a relative that did.
i really like the slepleigh. it's a beauty...
i would appreciate any help. thanks.
btw; i've got the mann and sager cleaned up, i just have to get a handle for the sager and make sheaths for both then i'll post pics. their both are a real nice addition to my collection.

I would say the Shapleigh Hardware Sportsman hatchet, if in good condition, could easily for for $35. The other ones, tough to say without looking, but sounds like he (pawn owner) got a nice haul, and worse, you know he didn't pay squat for them. The other ones, if plain jane, would be around 5 to 10 bucks each, again depending on the condition and the need of the buyer.

If you had to pick your poision, I would get the Sportsman hatchet, you will see the others again sometime somewhere else.

Hey Bearman, nice score my friend. BUY the Shapleigh. Is the Duck stamped into the head? A bit of a beater sold on the bay for almost $150.00. Is it a diamond edge mark? Search this to get old auction results, Vtg Shapleigh Diamond Edge "For Sportsman" Duck Hatchet

Regards

Robin

thanks for the input fellows!
pipeman; yes the duck is stamped into the head and yes it is a diamond edge mark. it's in really nice shape to. no rust what-so-ever, but could use a little cleaning up. also comes with sheath.

operator i know your right, i'm sure he didn't pay crap for them. one of his competitors just around the corner (both are old shops) told me that he will usually pay 1/2 of what he thinks he can sell an item for. but hey, they have to make a living too. whats bad about this one fellow is that he won't sell me any of his axes. he collects them to, and has quite a few hanging on his wall in the shop. :(

The "Ducky" hatchet will break $100 on ebey most of the time. and original handle and sheath , just buy it. be happy and run don't walk away.

Great find, but the problem with going to the same pawn shop all the time, is they see you coming and buy FOR you sometimes. This might not be the case here, but I have a good deal of experience with the pawn shop mentality, and it is pretty self serving. I guess thats the name of the game though.

Honestly, if your keen on what you want, and don't share to much...keep a good poker face, you can do pretty darn good at the pawn shops.
Sounds like you should jump on that Duck one, although I don't know it....other here seem too!!
