GW question and a pic

Hey there guys.

I've been moping around the fs threads looking for a GW that is worthy of my hunting pack. I'm a bit unsure about thick blades for meat work so I decided to do a google search and see what comes up.

I've decided that I'll wanted a satin/double cut finish as I want it to be used
as a flash steak knife if I go out for dinner (or stay in for that matter :D) so my options for that are .140 or .170 thick.

I think it may end up being a Fire Warden.
I have a question though.

I've stripped my AD and I've noticed that if it gets moisture on it and is left it starts to rust a little (nothing really, wipes off with 1200 grit)
Would the fire warden have this issue?

anyone wanna post some pics of their THINFI GW's that are more purty than worky?

Found this via google image on Thai Blades

Fatties aren't for what you want. They are for spiking trees. . . and drinks. ;)

Yes you will have to still take care of the knife. It isn't a Ginsu. It will get rust on it - more a patina than anything. As you noticed, it rubs off pretty easy. Given that, I'd avoid the Fire Warden b/c you'll be sanding down that cool pattern over time. Ditto for the fence-fry Warden. Perhaps an Orange, SMOG or Tiger (even a Green Linen or Snake - but those will be at even more of a premium) Warden.

OR, get one of them less-than-200 coated ones at the store and have someone strip and buff it for you. Ban, Bill Siegle, etc., Might be cheaper than the aforementioned normal-thickness-satin-Wardens.

well I've been looking around, and I think I have my short list.

at .140 I have Satin/Red G10, Black Tie, PE Smog
at .170 I have Fire Warden, Tiger Hide or DC/Black.

I do exaggerate as I'm a rather unsuccessful bowhunter, I haven't got the time to go hunting but would like a nice EDC fixed blade to take everywhere with me and not see too hard a work life.
I plan on getting a leather pocket sheath so the knife would be dried before putting it away so I don't really think rust/patina will be a problem, more curious than anything.

Any you have listed will work great along with any others in that thickness range.

The .140's will slice the best for sure, but it will be hard to tell much diff in it and the .170's. If you have large hands you may like the larger grip of the .170

I would go satin though, the Tiger GW was Satin and .170
All the .140's were satin.

I don't wanna sound like I am from GA,but I am so:p

Really I understand thin slices better, but the measurements aren't of the edge anyway.

Its the spine!

The backbone of your knife, and maybe your life.

The .270's are scary sharp and feels way better in my hand.

I just think I can do more with more.

Man after seeing all those awesome pics I don't feel worthy to post pics of my 7 wardens I have..Sweet collection guys.

Hard to go wrong with any of the .140 or .170 wardens in either Satin or DC.

Think AXE vs Block Splitter.

I have a more detailed reply in your thread.

Ever tried to bone out a pork/lamb leg with a .200 knife? I have it doesn't work very well. Even if it is hollow ground so that it is thinner at the edge you still have to force the spine through. You destroy any chance of using it for anything but diced and mince meat.

I want a thin GW so I can do this with more ease.
