Hey guys. I'm getting into making gyuto knives and want to know what the optimal tang length is for a WA style handle.

Also, what are the ideal dimensions?

Thank you!

3.5” is adequate
Think of your handle size/design and it will be more obvious to you

I don't think that there's a written rule saying that a Gyuto's tang has to be from A cm to B cm, 8-9cm should give you plenty toughness. My tang's height is 1cm because I make the tang hole using a 1cm diameter drill, it's much quicker and easier than trying to make a tight fit rectangular hole. I just jam some wood pieces on the walls of hole the ensure that the blade is in line with the handle and epoxy everything.

Thank you all for chiming in. That helps a lot. I know there isn't a set rule, but I'm glad ya'll gave me a good baseline and I appreciate your help!

I think the other answers mostly covered it, but I just wanted throw out there to consider the length of your drill bits. If you're doing a one-piece wa handle, you obviously don't want the tang longer than your drill. You can get away with a longer tang if you are using bolsters/spacers however, since you can drill them separately.
