I took delivery of a Large Camp Axe last night and took a few photos. Cell phone photos will a cell phone flash in a poorly lit basement workshop, but photos anyway.

This is a gift for my dad, for occasional fence repair with the poll and for sapling management as he walks the fence lines on his farm. As someone who grew up in and around farms and ranches just outside Calgary, he has an appreciation for the tomahawk aesthetic. I won't be testing it out - partly because it is a gift and partly because my yard is literally under 2' of snow right now.

I contacted H&B about a month ago asking about shipping options - I've found that shipping anything axe sized to Canada is prohibitively expensive. The default option on their site was going to charge me $59 shipping on a $60 axe. Mary went the extra mile to sort out a smaller box and significantly less expensive ($22) shipping for me, which is what sealed the deal. Took a couple weeks to make it, it shipped mid last week, and arrived last night.

Some details surprised me, I'm not sure about a couple small details, overall though it seems like a nice tool and I think my dad will like it.

The bit is not straight at all, but the chamfered edges on the poll is a nice touch. For the work it will be doing it looks like the perfect tool to me.

Nice choice I am waiting for a hawk from them myself maybe next week I hope.Great customer service on their part.Hope your dad enjoys it.Should have got one for yourself.

Lovely-looking implement but if your dad is similar age to me (60+) he's not likely to use it. Too much blade and not enough poll. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. But it's the thought that counts.

I like the substantial poll and the forging marks on the eye. Also like the emerald cut on the poll.

Yeah, the bit does lean a little. I'm not a big 'hawk guy but that's one that I would like to go play with.

The bit does have a bit of a bend in it - I think the photos emphasized this more than in person. The taper isn't uniform/symmetrical , which gives the impression that the whole thing has a twist. Practically shouldn't make any difference. The poll is a little shorter and thicker than I expected, but I like the ground and sanded bevels. Feels a little heavy for the length and shape of the handle, near the top end for one-handed work.

300 - My dad is indeed 60+, but I don't have any worries about him not using it. As you can make a sweeping assumption and insight based on his age, I'll assume that you are also going to provide me with axes and old tools on a semi regular basis. My dad does, he is a Canadian guy 60+ who spent some of his formative years with an axe and chainsaw. Let me know when the package is ready (looking for a 3 1/2+ felling head), I'll send you my address.

I didn't really wish upon you a 'sweeping assumption' but did presume he had many decades of familiarity with other types of pointy, swingy things. Tell you what: Report back in about a year with comments and pictures of all the wear and tear that your dad inflicts on this thing.
What are doting dads for but to salt their kids with decent tools, learning experiences and good memories. I have two outdoors-loving daughters that have been quite appreciative of receiving various types of outdoor gear. The pedigreed axes I have left will not entirely be 'free to good homes', sorry about that but nice try.

got mine today and beat the hell out of it. Wasn't able to even make a mark on the thing. I think I'm in love!

yeah it was a couple weeks, but totally worth it. I've been using it daily since I got it and not a scratch on it. Top quality hawks at reasonable prices. I'm definitely gonna buy another through them.
