I'm the new owner of a M43 Khurki. I purchased it from by a fellow forumite here on BF.

As I was cleaning/inspecting my new treasure, I found some stress cracks in the steel. They are located in areas that I would expect a stress crack to develop during the heat treating process.

Would this issue be covered by the H.I. warranty?

Typically, the HI warranty covers the original owner only. It used to be unconditional up until a few years ago when Uncle Bill and Yangdu started having people buy used khuks on fleabay, break them in a vise, and use the warranty to get themselves a new knife. Lovely people out there, huh?

You're a knife maker, though, so if you think it might be manufacture defect, you might send Yangdu the pics and an explanation of what you think it is. I have seen lines like the ones at the tip of your knife which were explained to me as being fold lines from working the steel. I have never seen anything like that fail. However, the cracking at the cho (little hoof shaped cut out) concerns me. It probably won't go anywhere either. I'm just the door man, so I'll defer to the experts on this one.

Was this khuk a user or did it just sit in a safe or on a wall?

Welcome to the forum, sorry it couldn't be under better conditions. The M43 is a great khuk. One of my favorites:thumbup:

Thanks for the welcome :D

I have never owned a khukri before, so I was really excited about getting this one. It does not look to be used much, and was definitely not abused.

I have seen fold lines from forging too, and the crack at the tip is not a fold line. It is hard to see in the picture, but the crack is a hairline one that runs from the very tip back about 1/2" to 3/8" along the spine.

The cracks at the cho run halfway through the steel, they concern me too as this is the weakest and most vunerable area of the knife. I suspect that the cracks occurred during the quenching phase of the heat treating cycle.

I'm sure Yangdu will see this sometime over the next couple of hours. It's still early in Reno:D She's seen thousands and thousands of these up close and personal. It'll get figured out one way or another:thumbup:

Send it back to HI for replacement.

Be sure to let us know how that replacement works out for you:)

Interesting place for cracks. The hardening that the kukuri went though shouldn't of caused it since they should be much softer at the tip and cho. I have heard of a crack at the cho a few times in HI history (I have seen it on non HI kukris before), since this area shouldn't be hardened it may of been caused by the kami cutting the cho when the area was not hot enough or a flaw in the steel.

Welcome to the forum Jack.

could've been a lamination defect in the original spring stock source material as well. i'm sure it happens. yangdu is taking care of you - that's service - she doesn't HAVE to. this is what will keep you coming back for more.

in use, given that's on the spine, i'm THINKING it would never come to anything, but if it did, well, mmm, would be an ugly one. i'd blame the mercedes that came from :)

Yes, I agree, the cracks may have been caused by something other than the heat treating...I can only offer an educated guess as to why they are there.

And a big +1 on the great H.I. customer service. I truly appreciate the fact that Yangdu has graciously offered to replace the khurki.....Thank you.

Also, thank you for welcoming me to your forum.

The ones at the cho would worry me, as they'd just get bigger with use.

Let me tell you, though, as you're finding out, Yangdu is a real gem. She's always been great to work with and bends over backwards for her customers. Customer service is so good, that when I see blades I like, I always think "I wonder if the kamis would make something like this. . ." In short, he customer service works.

It may be nothing. Maybe michaelmcgo tried to take away the cho and that's what happened ;) Unfortunately, from my wannabe engineer point of view, the only way to make sure this won't be a problem is with expensive quality control devices such as ultrasound or X-ray machines. So Yangdu's offer is way better.

I almost had that khuk in a trade, but I must agree your offer was way better.

So, what do you plan to get next cousinjack?

Well, after I get the M43, I am thinking....WWII

I'm glad I read this thread. Yangdu is more than fair. I shake my head in wonder, still, after all these years, when HI shows its grace. Welcome to the forum, Cousin Jack.
