So i really don't know much yet as i just started really getting into knives and swords...I recently purchased a Benchmade H&K 14410 Soldat and i have a question about sharpening it when the time comes, what is the best method to get it really sharp without scratching/tearing off the black finish? i tried oil and whetstone on a cheap Tac Force knife and it scratched it pretty bad, i'm not sure if it's normal even when experienced or if i'm just not that good at it yet...but i don't wanna scratch a knife that's actually worth something. I'm sure everyone has their own preference, and maybe a few methods i haven't found on google, so i'm curious.

Some send theirs to Benchmade directly for sharpening, others use their favorite tool. I use an Edge Pro, and also have a Smith's diamond stone for touchups.

I'm using my first consistent angle sharpener in a Lansky. I bought the 5 stone system. For the price I'd say you can't beat it. I just got a a D2 Mini grip from cabelas and put a new edge on it right away. I was able to get a keen polished edge on it. I never would have gotten close to that free hand. I can sharpen knives free hand but I cant get the preciseness and polish that I can with the Lansky system. Eventually I want to get an Edge Pro but right now the budget just isnt there for that.
