Hello everyone. I want a production folder for my new firefighting gig and EDC. The Emerson H&K CQC-10 and the Benchmade 520 both look and sound like they would fit the bill. How would they stack up against each other. Any opionions and first hand accounts are welcome. Thanx guys

I have neither knife, but I think I would get a fully serrated blade for your firefighting gig.

Any reason? I ask because I here serrations get caught up on things like clothing, seatbelts, and other items. From what I understand serrations are better suited for rope or meat.

Hello!

I'd take the Benchmade, if only because the blade shape looks better for all around cutting. Will you be using the folder with gloves? Take that into consideration. Maybe something like a good lockback, such as a Cold Steel Voyageur, would be easier to manipulate with gloves. Or the new Buck/Strider with the textured top of the knife certainly would be easy to open with gloves on.

At any rate, list what things you'd be cutting, and if you'll be wearing gloves or not, and then pick the right knife from that. I'd go with the Benchmade from the choices you listed.

Good luck firefighting!

For firefighting you're going to find just one blade isn't enough for everything. I carry a spyderco rescue in my turnouts along with trauma sheers and a gerber multi tool. You'll need the serrations to handle fire ground jobs like cutting rescue rope, seatbelts, and even turnouts. If you could only get 1 knife i wouls suggest a spyderco rescue. I also carry an emmerson commander in my station uniform and a leatherman wave. Pick your knives knowing that they will get lost, damaged, and contaminated along the way. Stay safe.
