picked up a nice H&R two blade at a gun show. Love the knife. Tight and nice fit & finish. Has a couple interesting markings. Looks to be HC steel, not SS. From what I have gathered it may be German steel assembled in Asia - only having "Germany" and the number 111 stamped on blade. It also has the number 216 stamped on the bolster. Id like to know the origin of this knife - just to know. I don't really care where it came from as I bought it as a user and carry it as such, and it is quality built.

Thanks-
(If I could figure out how to post photo from iPad I would...)

Hard to say what it is without a picture. Upload your image to a photo hosting/sharing site, and then you can link it here to the forums.

well...that didn't work. This should be made easier. Other forums I subscribe to, photo sharing is easy peasy, drag and drop or cut and paste. That was a dropbox url. I'm not downloading photobucket or some other crap program just to share a photo. Honestly, it could be made easier.

Searching Google with the string 'hen rooster 111 knife', I found at least a couple links that might be informative.

Seems a 111th Aniversary 10-knife set of Hen & Rooster knives was released (perhaps by A.G. Russell) in 1976. Looks like the knives had '111' stamped on the blade tang and 3-digit serial numbers stamped on the bolsters.

A couple examples seen in postings on AAPK's site are linked below:

Outstanding! Thanks David! The knife I have is exactly like the third from the top in the photo shown in the second link. Stag handle, exact same described markings. So it would seem mine was part of set #216 of such anniversary production sets. It'd be interesting to know if someone out there is missing this one knife from their set. I really like this knife, but if a guy has gone to the trouble to put together such a collection and is missing mine, I'd consider parting with it for an equal type and quality trade.

Thank you -

They look like nice knives. I'd assume all German-made; I don't think H & R would've outsourced any part of production to Asia or anywhere else, in '76.

Nice find.

I agree - AGR kept everything in Germany while he had it. That didn't change till after 1980 as I understand. So it seems like the seller I purchased from was shooting me as straight as I could expect. He said it was a German made and assembled knife but he couldn't answer exact date or what the markings meant. Either way, it caught my eye as I am a sucker for genuine stag. I use it a lot on knives I make. So I made him an offer on this knife and a Hartkopf coffin in stag I really liked as well. He gave me a good deal and I have really enjoyed the two knives. Knowing what I know now, the H&R deserves a little clean-up :)

Don't go too crazy with a clean up.
Just flush it out and use some mineral oil and raf to remove any light rust.
