I’ve been tempted to pick up this knife for the lake but keep reading varying reports of the steel being hard or soft. Some say it rolls cutting cord and others say it’s hard and won’t get damaged. What is it like? I know the she retention isn’t great which is ok because I won’t be using it nonstop at the lake.

All the H-1 Spydercos I've had held up at least as well as VG-10, (edge retention). With that said, I'd wait for the Magnacut version.

I've had 2 in H1 and both roll pretty easily. I had a pacific salt that used for fishing and I thought I could get it to work with enough sharpening and use, but no.. I cut mostly bait, fishing line with it. I...dislike that steel.

Fast forward to the LC200N in my carribbean and waterway, love that steel...tough, holds an edge, and just as stainless. There's a reason why spyderco moved on to this steel (and magnacut).

I did see some folks on here say the H1 serrated knives last a good long time, so that's something to look for. I just dislike sharpening fully serrated knives (I can't imagine sharpening a matriarch or a CS serrated knife) so I cant comment on it.

I'd say skip H1, my personal opi-onion. Hope this helps!

A dragonfly in lc200n or magnacut would be up my alley. I had the VG10 model but being dumb I sold it. It’s a really solid design

I have a rule with rust proof Spydercos. H1 for serrated blades (work hardened, they get better as they get used) and LC2000n for plain edged blades. Luckily with Spyderco, there is a large amount of models and configurations in both steels. A serrated Dragonfly in H1 would be just fine.

Regarding sharpening a Spyderco serrated blade, it’s apparently very easy to do on Spyderco’s Sharpmaker (which I have but haven’t needed to do it yet). For $5, I’m more than happy to send my knife back to Spyderco and let them do it. I don’t know why people are put off by the serrated blades, especially when Spyderco is willing to do it easily and cheaply 🤷‍♂️. There is nothing that cuts better than a SpydieEdge serrated blade

I say get it.
You won’t know if it’s for you based on others opinions.

I bought a se just to always have a knife available if a surprise water trip happens.
H1 is being phased out to h2 so maybe not available in the future.

Also magnacut sounds nice and all, however who knows when it will actually be a reality in df.

Yep, I agree with the sentiments in the above posts. I like serrated H1, and in fact I've found the SE H1 Dragonfly to be the best little knife to accompany a larger folder and have all of my possible serrated cutting needs covered. It's a handy knife to have on you and goes virtually unnoticed until you need it. However with plain edge I vastly prefer LC200N in the Salt series

That being said, when H1 was the only ultra-stainless (completely in fact) steel out there, I had no problem with its limitations. I simply expected to sharpened it often, did so, and it sharpens up easily. I was perfectly happy with that trade-off, and if you go into it with that in mind then there's nothing wrong with the steel IMO. I think the H1 Dragonfly would serve you fine as a dedicated lake knife. It's just that there are now better ultra-stainless options out there, but not in the Dragonfly yet so... 🤷‍♂️

what makes the serrations better
I'm not going into how they work , but believe me they certainly do . Not for chopping though .

Most dramatically better at fast and efficient cutting of flexible fibrous tough material . Ropes , lines , vines , fabric etc .

SE stays sharper , or at least usable , longer than a comparable PE, also . 😎

Main downside is when it comes time to sharpen . Spyderco type SE is much easier than Cold Steel type .

Veff type might be the easiest yet ? IDK them all .

I carry a serrated Salt 2 in my waistband at all times. From board shorts to suits.

It's my hard use utility knife that I don't mind semi-abusing.

Cuts salt bags for the pool in summer, for the driveway in winter, cordage, etc.

Not afraid to get it dirty, as the salt folders just use harsh dish soap or bathroom soap and water and put it away damp.

Amazing steak knife and you can cut up limes without worrying about corrosion.

3" sheepsfoot blade is super handy / useful.

I’d say get serrated H1 or spend $40 more for LC200 or a lot more for a SpydieChef and use it every day at the lake or for EDC and in the kitchen.

(I’m in a similar boat and already have the SpydieChef…I’ll save the money and get the H1 serrated DragonFly)

DAMN!

(edited to recognize my tremendous accidental pun)
