The other day I helped my older brother's girlfriends younger brother put together his first skateboard. I was excited to see him get into the sport, so I was more than happy to bring over my tools and set him up right. When I got there I realized I didn't have any dedicated tool to cut the griptape with. I usually keep a boxcutter or a cheap beater knife in my skateboarding bag for this purpose. I decided I'd just use my Tasman Salt I carry every day along with my primary EDC and sharpen out whatever damage occured.

But none did.

Granted I've only tried this same job with "lower end" knives like a Kershaw Skyline, Boker Trance, Opinel etc. I've never tried it with my BG42 Military or a ZDP blade to see what happens. Every time I've done this the edge has come away rolled, chipped, heavily dulled and gummed up with adhesive or a combination of all of the above. The Tasman Salt still had a usable edge and had no damage to speak of, even under intense magnification. I'm impressed, this is the best performance I've ever seen when cutting griptape, which is the nastiest, most abrasive stuff I've ever cut by a HUGE margin.

Also I'm normally not a fan of chisel ground edges, but for this particular task it worked better. Just an FYI in case someone else out there happens to cut griptape with spydercos :p

In the end I was happy that I could restore the edge with a minute on the SM browns, then polish it up with the whites.

I've been kinda hesitant to purchase any H1 Spydie due to edge holding concerns. This thread is tipping me in the direction of giving the steel a shot. Thanks.

I have a yellow Tasman with plain edge. I specifically bought it w/plain edge so I can resharpen as needed. I keep it in the office for box opening/cutting purposes and also lend it to the office 'gals' when they "need that yellow knife" of mine. In the ~18 months of use, I've retouched the edge on my Sharpmaker 3 times and got it back to hair popping sharpness each time.

This is a great knife & steel, and the yellow FRN makes it an ideal office tool without scaring the sheeple.

It doesn't hold an edge like S30V, but it's not going to roll over after one piece of cardboard. It's decently in the AUS-8 / AUS-10 range.

I've carried a Salt 1 SE for 3 years now. I work in landscaping and I use it hard. Cut stuff your not suppose to cut with a pocket knife. I touch it up once a year on my Sharp Maker. H1 holds an edge very well.

If you stick your grip tape to the deck and then use a file around the edge of the deck, it will cut the grip tape off and leave a much nicer edge on the grip tape than I have ever been able to achive with a knife.

it means it'll cut up whatever you throw at it along with things you don't. Been carrying salt 1 for 4 months now and so far doesn't disappoint. As a lab assistant of the Botany and plant sciences department, I cut various plants, trim shrubs, and what not. Holds up real well and a quick touch up with the grit stone brings it back to its razor sharpness.

you beat me to it. Grip tape is also good to put on Bike pedals if you don't want to have pins on them. I did this a few years ago (i bmx) because pedal stalls bend, snap and dull pins so i had one side griptape and one side pins. But back on topic. I'm suprised that there was no damage. Just feeling the grittiness hit my edge would make me cringe.
