The other day I helped my older brother's girlfriends younger brother put together his first skateboard. I was excited to see him get into the sport, so I was more than happy to bring over my tools and set him up right. When I got there I realized I didn't have any dedicated tool to cut the griptape with. I usually keep a boxcutter or a cheap beater knife in my skateboarding bag for this purpose. I decided I'd just use my Tasman Salt I carry every day along with my primary EDC and sharpen out whatever damage occured.
But none did.
Granted I've only tried this same job with "lower end" knives like a Kershaw Skyline, Boker Trance, Opinel etc. I've never tried it with my BG42 Military or a ZDP blade to see what happens. Every time I've done this the edge has come away rolled, chipped, heavily dulled and gummed up with adhesive or a combination of all of the above. The Tasman Salt still had a usable edge and had no damage to speak of, even under intense magnification. I'm impressed, this is the best performance I've ever seen when cutting griptape, which is the nastiest, most abrasive stuff I've ever cut by a HUGE margin.
Also I'm normally not a fan of chisel ground edges, but for this particular task it worked better. Just an FYI in case someone else out there happens to cut griptape with spydercos
In the end I was happy that I could restore the edge with a minute on the SM browns, then polish it up with the whites.
