So what does Spyderco's H1 steel in plain edge compare to in terms of edge holding? And if the serrated H1 steel holds its edge longer than the plain edge of the same model, what would you compare it to? 420, 440, AUS8, VG1, VG10,...etc? Just curious.

My plain edge Aqua Salt rolled its edge immediately (multiple times) when carving wood. I've only had that happen with underhardened steels. I sold that knife.
Much later I purchased a serrated Salt 1. I really like this one. I haven't had any issues with edge holding and the steel's stainproof quality is more useful to me in a folder. I don't have to worry about getting water out of the pivot or think about drying the knife ever. It's also unlined so it's very light.
Sorry that doesn't answer your question directly.

Because it is work hardening the more the steel has been worked with the better the edge holding, for example a brand new PE Salt 1 won't hold an edge as long as a Salt 1 PE that has been sharpened on a Bench Sander multiple times are used hard enough to heat up the blade (think lots of cardboard). Adding serrations also significantly hardens H1, so PE H1 will be around AUS8 or 440B edge holding, while Serrated H1 will be more like VG-10. Any H1 I buy in the future will SE (probably a Pacific Salt next).

Simple cutting is not enough to work harden H1, even over a life time.

I had a brand new Pacific Salt in PE that I sold to a good friend of mine which he insisted that I sell it to him. I do have a serrated model coming in this week for myself though.

I was also wondering if using my WorkSharp WSKTS belt grinder to sharpen my friend's PE model would make a difference in edge holding.
