Hi All,

While there is a lot of mentioning of this steel, I can't find neither the maker of the steel, nor its standard name(s), e.g. AISI, JIS, etc..

Search on the web results in few thousand results, and mainly various articles discussing H1 steel production increase/decrease :)

Anyway, if someone has the info, I'd appreciate. Specifically, is h1 proprietary name or standard name, if so which standard? And who makes that steel?

H1 is just H1 as far as I know. It's made by Hitachi, if I am correct.

Thanks. Dem, can you PM or post that link? I can't fine Mike Janich as a user on Spyderco forum search engine and simply searching for H1 even in thread titles returns few pages of thread titles, it'll take a while to read them all to fish for the info I need.

H 1 = C:0.15% - Mn: 2.0% - Cr: 16% - Ni: 8.0% - Mo: 1.0% - N: 0.11% - Si: 4.0% . Made by " Myodo" I believe ;

Hi Gator,

ELDE is correct, H1 is made by Myodo in Japan.

What type of information are you seeking?

BTW, your steel chart is very nice.

As mentioned, there is often discussion about H1 on the Spyderco site, both at Blade forums, Usual Suspects and the Spyderco home page site.

I find it peculiar that there's 0.15% Carbon in there...

If I remember right, the Nitrogen needs SOME carbon to bond to, but effectively it's negated by the addition of the Nitrogen. This stuff is great once it's used and sharpened a few times. It work hardens faster than other steels, and gets harder than most, too.

All metal work hardens, H1 just does it faster in a way that we like.

Thanks gyus, I had composition but it was real difficult to find the manufacturer :)

I was looking for the name of the manufacturer of the steel which I already got, thanks again..
And if possible the name of that steel in official standards, JIS, AISI, DIN, W-Nr etc... But looks like H1 is proprietary and there won't be standard names?

I am working on next version of the knife steel chart and this time I'm paying more attention to steel standard names. What I have currently isn't very "ordered", name column contains proprietary names, standard names, and if you wanted to view the chart for let's say AISI standard it's not possible now.

Once the new chart is up one can select the standard, at least few more popular ones, or choose proprietary names to display in the name column.
That also gives the ability to see and compare different steels from makers under the same standard name if necessary.

I've tried spyderco forums, but H1 steel came up in too many conversations and I figured it was faster to ask here.

About halfway down in this thread....

Hi Gator,

The only name that I have ever heard for it was H1. That's what Myodo calls it. Spyderco trademarked the H1 logo that is used on the H1 blades near the hole on Spyderco knives.

Thanks Sal, that works fine, there's bunch of proprietary steels out there and in the chart too..
