i had a spyderco pacific salt givin to me and the blade is scratched a ton so i was wondering what affects would stonewashing have on H1 steel? i know it opens up pores but how would it affect H1 in particular?

It doesn't open pores, bead/sand blasting creates small craters. The effects? None.

I was actually contemplating this sometime last week. It is said that H1 is a "work hardening steel", which is the reason that the serrated H1 models have a much higher edge hardness than their PE brothers. As such I wonder if the stone washing process would constitute enough "work" to harden the outer layer of blade steel. Food for thought I guess.

Old thread, but I'm very very very very curious about this. Hopefully someone knows.

Me too, it's an interesting concept. I don't think either bead blasting or stonewashing H1 would change its properties or anything, but since it's work hardened, I'd like to see what the finished product looks like and if it was tough to do.

I have a Caspian Salt (got it at a smoking deal before it got discontinued) I'm considering having stone washed if it helps the steel. Then again, I have to wonder why Spyderco doesn't implement it unless it has no effect or simply not favorable. H1 is a hard beast to tame it seems. All H1 models are hollow ground, and rather thin. This probably has to do with the "work-hardening" effect.

I was about to start another thread on this but since we're here....
Would using a belt grinder to sharpen a PE Pacific change the edge retention on H1steel? I got a WorkSharp WSKTS belt grinder and I'm wondering if that would help the process.

Dude, I'm in the same situation for a caspian salt (it's a combo edge). I've only taken it out river rafting once (no need to clean ofcourse, as it's been 100 percent corrosion resistant). I also use a WSKTS but I might just use the ultra fine belt on it for touch up. I think the high speed honing would add some edge hardening. Let me know how it works for you.

I'll have to wait till next week. I just received two H1 folders. A Pacific in PE and a Salt I serrated. One of them is going to my brother when he arrives next week for vacation. It depends on what he chooses. I think I would have to try cutting things with the factory edge first and then sharpen it with WorkSharp and see the difference otherwise I would never know.
