H1 toughness

"Tough" in what way? "Tough" in the technical sense (able to withstand shock and to be deformed without rupturing)?

I had a spyderco Pacific Salt in H1...I used it underway and it held up great. Not once did it ever rust, and this was under hard, open ocean use. Plus, it was a Spyderco, so the quality was great and it stayed sharp. They are some hard use knives...can take all that the elements can throw at them.

It's unbelievably tough...almost like it's made out of metal or something!

Seriously, I'm not sure if there's a consensus on the 'toughness' of this steel because most of the knives that have been made with it have been marketed mostly for its corrosion resistance and not toughness.

I have one of the Spyderco fixed blade H1 knives (Aqua Salt) and haven't noticed it being particularly fragile...but I haven't tried to hammer it through a bolt either.

For toughness I meant the ability to handle hard use chopping, camp knife, use etc. In particular the Spyderco Rock Salt, at 1/8inch thick would it be tougher like carbon steel compared to stainless?

I saw a photo of an H1 folder blade that had been bent in a press to 90 degrees without breaking. This was alleged to be in-house testing at Spyderco. So yes, H1 is extremely tough, will bend a lot before it breaks.

H1 is really tough, but there's no data on just how tough, and it is not used in large choppers so it will never develop that sort of reputation. It should easily handle camping tasks though. Splitting logs and the like doesn't require much toughness.

Where are the pics of the blades that were bent over 90° without fracturing?

I've also seen the picture of the H1 knife bent to about 80 degrees. It is quite amazing, I'll see what I can do about digging it up. I've never owned any H1 but it appears to be very tough and I really like the idea of being work hardened.

TazKristi posted them here and at the Spyderco factory forums. Do a search by her username over there and they should pop up within the last year or so.

Sal asked me to share a few pics of a Pacific Salt blade we recently did some testing on...:D

I REALLY like my Salt 1 alot...great knife. i have had both a pac salt and a salt 1, both were edcs and are were not babied and are both in great shape. i love the H1 because it never really gets dull and if it does its really really easy to sharpen. you wont be disappointed.
